Default Writing a letter for appeal... and the appeal process

Hi there...

I talked to my bf's Dad today who is determined that he was wrongly sentenced. He contacted a lawyer and spoke to him about everything. The lawyer said that the sentence totally off base. He is determined now that he is firing his old lawyer (who told him he would walk) and hiring a new lawyer to start the appeal process.

A couple questions...
Isn't he entitled to legal aid while in jail?
How do appeals work? I read the one website that describes the appeal process but I am looking to find out what the success rate is, what more info they need, what grounds they stand on to fight the case, etc...

Also, would it help if I got people to write character letters for my bf? Including myself? He did go in there with 4 letters and his presentencing report recommended probation with some community service.

Any one go through the appeal process? And if so did you write a letter on your other's behalf?

What kind of things should I include?

Thanks in advance!
