Default How Norway is Teaching America to make its prisons more humane

RINGERIKE, Norway ― The bedroom, off a light-filled corridor, is small but not cramped. It houses a single bed, a desk, wardrobe, TV and a small bathroom. The window looks out onto a grassy hill. Outside the door, there’s a kitchenette, where a bread knife hangs from a loop of string affixed to the wall. A long dining table is scrubbed clean, and a couple of shabby but comfortable-looking sofas have been arranged in front of a TV. The faint smell of stale cigarette smoke lingers in the air.

The space has all the appearance of a college dorm; only a cluster of uniformed officers in a glass-walled office at the end of the hallway gives it away.

Hey,
I'm one of the producers of the documentary mentioned at the end of the story. Earlier we've produced a film called "Breaking the Cycle" (available on Netflix) about a Norwegian deputy warden visiting his colleagues in the US.

It will be interesting to see how the project will take form in SCI Chester in Pennsylvania. Our documentary will be following this project.

Well its certainly alot different in the US, as compared to other countries
I enjoyed this article, and the ideas they have on reform, rehabilitation, etc.

Default Crosspost?

Sidewalker, would it be ok for me to ask you if you could crosspost this in the Pennsylvania subforum? I'm not able to do it since I've posted so few posts yet.

Thanks for posting. Really got me thinking how far from "rehabilitation" we are in my state.

We need to do the changes slowly in order to study what would work in America and which would not (because America is completely different than Norway). Over time, adopting the Norway model but adjusting it to our unique demographic, cultural, socioeconomic, and population size needs is the best way to steer our correctional systems.
