Default We're home after 7 years... Finally!

For 7 years, I dreamed of the day I would go and pick him up. I finally show up to the unit at the time they told me and when I got there they told me to park in a little lot outside of the prison. As I was sitting in my car, anxiously waiting there were some inmates mowing the lawns and pruning trees. I couldn’t help but wonder how long their sentences were and when would they be getting out. I also couldn’t help staring at the guard up in the picket that you could visually see had a shotgun on him. I thought that was only in the movies. When I asked the guard, manning the booth he told me that when they have inmates out on the premises working that he was watching them. Auugh. This coupled with a ton of other reasons made it all the more of a reason to hurry up and get the hell out. So finally a guard drives up in a car and they tell me to follow him and that I was NOT allowed to get out of my car for any reason…. I told him, “I’ve waited 7 years for this, I can hang on for 7 more minutes to hug him.” He laughed and told me that he would be stopping me again on my way out.

I followed the guard for what seemed like forever as I was slowly brought around to the front. I drove through areas where more inmates were working and guards nearby in tractor type trucks watching them… and of course got closer to the guard up in the picket with his shot gun… the whole thing was rather disturbing and made me even more nervous. As we pulled up to a door with a small overhang, I saw my guy dressed in the most ridiculous army green pants with a 1970’s looking striped button down shirt. He looked terrible. ( He also hadn’t shaved in days and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days.) He was walked up to my car and a female guard, told him, “ Your best days are ahead of you, you take care.” I tried to wave to her but she was gone before he was even seated in the car. The guard I followed in to the unit, was the same that escorted me out. My guy was just quiet… it’s like he was shell shocked and just sitting in the car exhausted. He leaned over and adjusted the AC ducts in the car to him and just said, “thank you God, you are here, I don’t think I’d make it another 8 hours on a bus ride home. I told him, “I can’t hug you or do anything till we are out of here.” He smiled and said, “ that’s ok, I don’t want you hugging me till I’ve had a shower and get these nasty clothes off of me.” We drove up to the guard in the booth he came out and told him “Alright Sir, I’m going to ask you for the last time to show me your ID. I gotta make sure we’re releasing the right guy.” He took out his ID and said, “Yes, Sir.” After checking his ID against his list on his clip board and he leaned into the car, and said, “ Ok, Sir… just know that we aren’t Motel 6 and we will NOT be leaving a light on for you. you stay out of here, you got that?” We all laughed… even though I could tell my guy was on the verge of tears, but he still managed a smile and told him, “ I have no plans on coming back.”

What I thought was interesting was that even a few of the same inmates that I had passed on the way in and didn’t even look at my car or me managed to wave to him on the way out. I suppose they know when someone is coming out. We got to the Marriot which was less than 10 minutes away, he walked in straight to the restroom to the shower and came out looking like the guy I knew. It looked like he finally was getting some color back in his now shaved face and well, let me just say that he’s still the best looking man I’ve ever seen. We drove a couple of hours till we were far enough from Abilene, he ate BBQ and kept talking about how bright everything was. I thought the food was “ok” but he kept going on and on about how it was the best thing he had ever eaten!
I’m very proud of him, he’s not hesitant about being around people. We’ve gone to a few restaurants and to the grocery store a few times. His decision-making is a little delayed; he gets a little overwhelmed when there are more than 2-3 choices. He felt the need to smell every single fabric softener (I have to keep reminding myself to have patience) and in the end picked the one he liked in the first place. He also tends to ask permission to do stuff first. Like he asked if he could change the channel on the tv and I wasn’t even in the room watching it. I told him, “You watch whatever you want.” I think he realized after he asked that he didn’t need to. But I think they are so programmed to wait for everything and then ask permission. He says he loves being able to eat breakfast at 8-9am and not 4am. He loves that no one is waking him up every 2 hours for count. And he especially loves wearing jeans again since he now has pockets. I’ve noticed that when I really get him laughing his eyes immediately tear up and he truly laughs till he’s crying. I think that’s a good thing. It’s going to take awhile, but he’ll be back to himself, eventually. He can’t get over how expensive everything is and he goes back to work on Monday. So… this is us. He’s been out 48 hours and so far so good. I’ll still be around so if any of you Texas people have any questions I can help with what I learned. And to everyone else… God Bless you all and your loved ones. This is not a journey for the weak. But there is still hope for a better day and coming home again.

Aw man...ya got me cry'n Happy tears, for both of you. All those things you mention remind me of how it was with My Mr after his release. I'm surprised he's ready to go to work after doing 7 years and only being home a couple of days, but I suppose getting into a routine will be good for him.

Thanks so much for posting your Homecoming

Thank you so much for your countdown! I showed it to him last night and he actually took time to read all the entries. He especially thought it was extra cool that people I've never met were excited for him to come home too. This site has been life saving and I will forever be indebted for all the advice, help and encouragement. Thank you, again.

Wow Texas I've been counting down with you and you actually made it to the end and lived to tell about it! Sounds like things are going better than they tell about on here. I've got 7 more days and a wake up. Keep talking to us on here. It really helps to know what happen afterwards because so few tell about it. I guess people get busy with their lives. Thanks for the cool story. You're a great writer by the way.

TexasChick - thank you for sharing...like Patch, I found myself in tears reading this. I am so, so happy for you both and so, so sad for everyone who is in prison, and the families waiting... But, as you say - there is hope..... There is always hope.

Wishing you and your man all the best going forward - congratulations for making it through these years. Much happiness to you both

Great homecoming story! Just know that your knowledge would be helpful and appreciated by us non-Texas folks too.

I loved it! Thank you for sharing it. I wondered what the exit process was like at different facilities... My husband's release was so different than yours. Congratulations!!!!

This is great! It's amazing how one can feel so happy for someone without knowing them. I wish the best to the both of you and thank God your husband made it home safe. Praying for all other inmates, including my brother, to have the opportunity to make it home.

aw..so happy for you both! he's home...how nice it is to know he is doing well with you,and even though yes it will take more adjusting long as he has YOU he is going to be just fine...him crying/and or the tears in his eyes says so much.It is clear to him yes, how much things have change.I got emotional when i read this part.My man has been institutionalize/in prison a long time since barely 17/18 yrs young. Now at just about ten years later he has no idea how things have changed + that out here in the "real world" that it's just not at all as simple as he think, that it is not that "easy at all."But he know that he has me, to help him through it all...Glad he appreciate how great/awesome PTO forum is too. That's nice.

Now...
Just sure to return minimum each/couple months or so. then we can keep on seeing how positive/focus/happy both of you are now that your sweet one is home. I AM VERY HAPPY reading this 2x, god speed. hugs and blessing your way. Enjoy each day and night, your entire now that he is home and safe with the one he love the most and who he know love him so much and that is you. So sweet...'I can't wait til 2017.

Congratulations on having him back with you; I pray you guys have all the joy your hearts can contain. I read your story and nodded with recognition in places [eg: everything is seen as expensive]. More so, I smiled at the little pearls the officers offered. Thanks for sharing.

I've read this quite a few times now (for inspiration) and this is one of the best things to say to anyone,

“ Ok, Sir… just know that we aren’t Motel 6 and we will NOT be leaving a light on for you. you stay out of here, you got that?” We all laughed… even though I could tell my guy was on the verge of tears, but he still managed a smile and told him, “ I have no plans on coming back.”
