Hello, my man is also in a few school programs. The main one is from 8 to 315 monday through friday. And the other classes varies throughout the week at different times past 330 until 830. He does alot of work. However, he call atleast 10 times a day. I know that is alot but he know how I am. They have breaks throughout class and also lunch break and he may call back to back. I'll be happy when one day he come home and we no longer have to wait on a phone call.

Mines taking classes. He gets 3 weeks off for every class he passes with a C or better. Right now he's got one class. Going for his fourth AA since he's been on the inside. I don't remember what the college is called, but he's doing pretty well. Plus he's working as well, (8 hours Sat-Wed) and attending groups when he can. So he only calls once a week as well. It's not so easy but we are so close to being done.

Everyone processes their work load differently. If he is taking many classes, he may have a lot of work to do. Have you discussed talking more than once a week? Do you email back and forth? Maybe for his focus it is enough for him, but you need to communicate that you need a little bit more.

Okay, BPI is a bit different than a lot of schooling in prison. You can read about it and watch a bit of the PBS documentary on it here https://bpi.bard.edu

Grinnell in Iowa is part of the same network of great colleges offering programs in prison https://www.grinnell.edu/academics/c...al-arts-prison

There are about a dozen such programs nationwide. Because Pell Grants are again allowed for prisoners, these programs are available, but they are different from the correspondence courses or other educational opportunities typically available.

The degree requirements for those programs are no joke, and they are intensive programs, but they are not free in the sense that the taxpayer is picking up the tab (along with Bard and the supporting college as the instructors generally volunteer to physically go to the prisons, and the general tuition rate is what is covered by Pell and the like). Since there are only a very limited number of spots in these programs, it is quite an honor to get into them.

Just to clarify, no one gets paid in NYS prison system to go to college.
He may be unemployed and receiving idle pay, giving him a few bucks a week.
The college programs supply everything he needs for school. But he canít remain unemployed, usually itís temporary because college classes donít fill the time and the assessed needs.

If he is in bpi, he is a full time student.

OP said Bard BPI. Bard BPI is full time, results in the exact same degree real world students earn, have the exact same requirements (with internet limits and majors limits), and is very intensive. The handful of colleges that are in the same group as BPI (Grinnell, etc) do the same thing. There are only 300 students in the BPI program in NY State prison system. All of the professors teach outside of prison for the college and are tenured.

Getting in BPI is significant. Graduating from BPI is special. Getting out of prison with a Bard degree also means something, especially when it comes to finding a job and other supports.

I believe I read he has 2 classes a week. That is where I am coming from.
NYU also runs a degree program at Wallkill.

My LO graduated with an associates from BPI. He said he is applying to get into the BA program with BPI, and is taking 2 classes. He said it is overwhelming and he has a lot of work, so I only talk to him once a week. I was wondering if your LO in BPI is overwhelmed with the work too? He said he gets idle pay for taking classes with bpi

And again, there is a difference. You could check the links I already provided. You could look up the history of education inside American penal institutions, or whatever.

BPI means a huge reading list. We are not talking about doing a workbook to get a course credit - we are talking about reading lists right out of top colleges. If your Freshman Rhetoric course did not involve reading 10 source texts, you are not talking the same thing.

Different universities have had different responses to education in prisons. Some ignore them. Some use them as income streams. Some offer an AA degree that you could get from any community college. Some use the same curriculum as selective or highly selective universities.

This is not just offering a class or two at a prison. This is much more intensive. And the faculty is top notch - top of their fields in many cases, not TAs and adjunct faculty.

Still stand by my statements, see it daily.
The ones holding them down on the outside deserve a call. The ones sending money deserve a call.
Take a break and call the wives and mothers keeping things together on the outside whilst working on college is not to much to ask.
This is life.
I don’t care how busy you are in your degree program, there’s someone out there support you, keeping the family together, so that you, the incarcerated loved one, can dedicate all your time to your goals.
It’s thoughtless to do otherwise.
