Forsyth prison inmates, state employee moved
Officials found 1 inmate with money beyond limit

By Patrick Wilson

A state employee and two prison inmates were sent to different places after one of the inmates was found with several thousand dollars in cash at the Forsyth Correctional Center, the N.C. Department of Correction said yesterday.

Managers at the minimum-security prison on Craft Drive, off Cherry Street, asked the department for an investigation early this month after the discovery was made, said Keith Acree, a department spokesman.

The department's internal auditor is investigating the prison's canteen, the small store where inmates can buy toiletries, snacks and cigarettes.

Friends and relatives of inmates can put money into funds at the canteen so prisoners can buy things.

"There have been no disciplinary or criminal charges filed," Acree said. "It would be an internal issue to determine what happened, but those findings could be turned over to local law-enforcement for ... further investigation or prosecution."

The auditor is still investigating how the inmate found with the money came into possession of several thousand dollars, Acree said. That inmate worked in the canteen.

"At this point, we're not sure. That's what we're trying to figure out," Acree said. He declined to say exactly how much money the inmate had but did say that it was less than $5,000.

"They're not supposed to have more than $40 in cash," he said, "so it's way over the limit."

He declined to say what the connection was with the second inmate who was moved.

The Forsyth Correctional Center houses men. One of the inmates in the investigation was transferred to a prison in Rowan County, and the other was transferred to Guilford County.

Acree declined to name the inmates and the female prison employee who was reassigned because the investigation is continuing.

Wallace Shields Jr., the superintendent of the prison, could not be reached for comment.
