Default Mat-Su Pretrial / Alaska Prisons

Mat-Su Pretrial

Superintendent: Steve Brunger

339 East Dogwood Road
Palmer, Alaska 99645

Telephone: (907) 745-0943
Fax: (907) 746-0501

Programs
Mat-Su pretrial offers educational programming to include adult basic education, GED, and life skills in order for individuals to improve interpersonal and academic skills, to successfully function within the institution, and to enhance community integration and economic self-sufficiency.
As this is a pre-trial facility, classes and programs are presented in shorter seminars of 1 1/2 to 3 hrs, 1 to 3 days in length. Some anger management and parenting series can extend to as long as eight 3 hour sessions. All programs target 100% of the inmate population. Class offerings are posted weekly in inmate dorms and inmates are then given the opportunity to request participation in those classes. The library is also available to them daily for study, reading and educational videos.

Classes are taught by the education coordinator, as-well-as by outside volunteers and contractors. GED testing is also available to inmates. The education coordinator is the Chief Examiner for Mat-Su Pre-Trial.

Examples of Life Skills Classes include:

Anger Management

Stress Management

Computer Skills

Health and Fitness

Communication

Time Management

Motivation

Goals

Parenting

Budgeting

Checkbook Balancing

CPR/First Aid

HIV/AIDS

Career Planning

Job Skills

Critical Thinking

Cognitive Self Change 1 & 2

Computer Skills/Lab

Examples of ABE classes include:

Basic Math Skills

Writing Workshop

Literature Review

Reading for Comprehension

History/Cultural Awareness

Science

Because of the nature of a pre-trial facility, with its relatively short-term population, post-secondary education is not offered. However, inmates are given information on the opportunities available to them. Vocational education is also not formally taught, but inmates do have opportunities for hands on instruction through work opportunities at this facility (i.e. Kitchen workers, janitorial, laundry).

Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility has several support services available for inmates:

Education Coordinator

Probation Officer

Mental Health counseling

Medical (via Registered Nurse, Medical Doctor, and Physician Assistants)
