I did not vote. The option "nothing - its a medical matter" wasn't offered.

I think a great deal of addicts use drugs to numb out their real problems, these problems need to be identified and worked on. Therefore I usually suggest getting clean and therapy.

a different viewpoint:

stepson does crack, holds up a convience store with box cutter, goes to jail
stepson gets out, paroles to girlfriend's house..she sugar mamas him.
He steals everything, even nailed down, from her home numerous times to finance drug use. she had put up her house for bail! lucky she did not lose that.
His mother has also always bankrolled him and worked double shifts at retirement age and did lose house.
It accelerates, he puts a pair of scissors through his cheek-a really deep wound, and tells different family members that a dealer did it for money owed and would kill him next. and other scams. Family members "rescue" him out to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
Dirty UA, he gets his "last" warning.

On the other hand, I have told him that if he steals so much as 25 cents from me, I will prosecute.
He threatens suicide. again. I call 911.

His addiction does irreperable harm to my marriage.

I find out he has forged a check from our account, when we are on disability and barely make it and he takes a month's income. Husband kept it a secret for a long while, until he couldn't because....the effect of the theft. I went ballistic. Husband's account and he would not prosecute.

he leaves girlfriends house and moves into crack house. use increases, "death threats" and injuries become more and more frequent.

Husband and I had talk, he agreed with me but will never admit it. I turned him in to his parole officer regularly until he was remanded back into prison. He was going to wind up dead out loose on the streets.

Final price: divorce.

As the 12 steps say, addiction is a family disease. There are many more victims than just the addict.

I have no remorse over reporting him and his return to prison.

But yes, I find some of the sentences I read about in here insane.

Where's the third option? What an awful poll.
