Default MUSIC THROUGH BARS project

MUSIC THROUGH BARS project seeks to help provide greater access to music for those on the inside.

We are currently accepting donations of cd's to be donated to the Snake River Correctional Institution's Music Club Library.

We are also in the process of compiling a resource guide to music availability in prisons nationwide. If you have any information regarding music programs or availability at any facility within the US..... please post it to this thread.

I welcome any questions or suggestions regarding this project. Thanks.

First question..

Access. What access do you have to have leave to distribute this material? Is this aggregate of material to be donated to the institution's recreation department for use at their discretion?

Second question.

How or will these can these materials be equitably distributed within the population? Or is the idea to have a target (portion) of the population who meet some eligibility to recieve the donation?

What are Snake River's (or the State's) property guidelines on a personal music device (cd or walkman/radio) and the number of cassettes/cds that an individual can have as approved personal property?

what kind of music, cd's, or instruments? It would be cool if people could start bands and have battle of the bands like they do with locl shows here, and family members can come and watch each band play and pick a winner, but there all winners. So what exaclty are they looking for?

Prisoners couldn't have personal CD players here in Oregon last I knew. Only headphone radios without even cassette players. Is this something that would be done through a counsellor accepting the donations and putting them in a library where inmates would go to that area to listen to the CD's? Can you give us more information? Is this music library already in existence at Snake River or is it something you're working to have put into effect there? What about OSP and Coffee Creek and some of the other prisons here in Oregon? Will they also have music libraries and be given donations?

Hi everyone.... sorry for the wait on more information. I've had some trouble posting lately cuz I use a computer at work where the security settings are too high. I'm definitely glad to have received so many questions and interest in the project.

I'll try to answer a few of the questions that have accumulated, and in the near future will post a more detailed description of the program itself.

ACCESS:

All donations will (unfortunately) become the property of the prison. They will be kept in the Music Club's growing music library. Inmates can go to the listening center there to listen to the music. They currently have about 10 cd players for people to use, only within the listening center. These have all been donated, and they are always looking for more donations. The music cannot at this time be checked out. These are not ideal circumstances, but it's definitely better than in many other prisons, where people only ever can listen to the radio.

THE CLUB ITSELF:

The SRCI Music Club and it's programs were started a couple years ago by a small group of inmates, and has grown only through their hard work and dedication. It started out very small and has only been growing and growing as more and more inmates become involved. They have received a limited amount of funding from Prison Activities, though a good amount of their equipment has been donated by friends and family of those inmates involved. I recently received a detailed essay on the history and different aspects of the Music Program, written by an inmate who has been involved from the beginning, and will make this available to anyone who is interested.

DONATION PROCEDURES:

The Music Through Bars project has been formed at the direct request of individuals within the SRCI Music Program in order to gather donations and spread awareness of the program and their needs and goals.

One of the main purposes of this project is to ease the donations process for interested individuals on the outs. The donations process can be lengthy and arbitrary, as anyone who has ever received a mail rejection can attest to, and we are still working out all the details of what will and will not be accepted. Any donated cd's that get rejected will be sold or traded for cd's that will not.
This is a relatively new program, so we are all learning as we go. One of the advatages we have is that it is so new, and there are not alot of specifications on the books regarding donations of music. (yet).

OTHER OREGON FACILITIES:

As far as I know, SRCI has the only Music Program of it's kind in Oregon.. Though OSP has some sort of Music Club, it doesn't seem to have as much going for it as the one in SRCI at this time.

Though we are mostly focusing on the SRCI program to begin with, we hope that the project will grow. The other main purpose of the Music Through Bars project is to compile a resource guide to the music programs and rules in prisons throughout the country. We are currently compiling this guide solely through the responses of prisoners, and are asking not only about music clubs and recorded music, but also access to musical instruments and bands, both from within and without the prison walls. We hope to be able to assist other prisoner supporters to provide help to folks all over the US.
Anyone who would like to contribute information toward this project is welcome to contact me.

CLARIFICATIONS:

It has recently been brought to our attention that a few clarifications need to be made regarding the nature of this project.

1. The SRCI Music Program and the Music Through Bars project are completely separate entities that share a few common goals.

2. The SRCI Music Program is a prison-based program made up entirely of inmates and staff.

3. The Music Through Bars project is completely volunteer- run, and has no correlation with DOC staff, programs, or funding in ANY way. Music Through Bars is made up solely by friends and family of inmates, who volunteer their time simply out of the hope that something good may come of it.

THANKS!!!

The essay, which was written by an inmate who has been involved in the Music Program from the beginning, is a little too long to post here. I have a typed version of it available that I will gladly send to anyone who writes to the address above. I am not rich, so PLEASE enclose a few stamps, and I will send you all the info abailable on both the SRCI Music Program AND the Music Through Bars project. Thanks.

NEW PROJECT through Music Through Bars:

GUIDE TO MUSIC RESOURCES IN US PRISONS

Music Through Bars is currently compiling a resource guide to music resources in prisons. ANYONE who has any information regarding music/band access in US prisons, PLEASE write!!!
The information you provide will be combined with others into a prisoner-support guide to be used for and by prisoners, friends & family, and activists to help provide prisoners with greater access to recorded music, equipment, and instruments. It will also assist outside bands with booking shows in prisons, which will hopefully encourage more bands to seek out prison audiences. It will help prisoners connect with friends and family via music and radio requests. Lastly, it will raise awareness of the need for musid in prisoners' lives... and hopefully will spark other music-oriented support projects in the future.

*What radio stations can be received in this facility?

*Is there a music program of any kind in this facility? What is it like? How accessable is it? Does it have musical instruments or sound equipment? Does it (or could it) have a music library/listening center?

Default Still here

Hi. Just wanted to let everyone on this site know that we're still here, trying to help prisoners have more access to music, instruments, bands, etc.. and we still need YOUR help! This project is growing, and is definitely in need of people's support. We especially want to hear from inmates and family who can tell us about the music related rules of prisons in the US. Any and every prison, we wanna hear about it. Please contact me if you have any questions or know anything related to music access in prisons. THIS PROJECT CAN'T SUCCEED WITHOUT YOUR HELP. Thanks!!

Default Music Behind Bars

Here's a place where prisoner-created music is sold online. Check out http://www.prisonart.org/artwork/music/music.htm and listen to the sample jazz created by Dan Pens, a prisoner in Washington State.
