Welcome to Prison Talk. If you are unable to visit him in Oakdale, your contacts will have to be done by mail, phone calls and email. He will earn 635 days of regular good time (21+ months) off of his sentence and he may be eligible to earn an additional 12 months after completing the residential drug abuse program (RDAP). He needs to ask the RDAP coordinator two questions, is he eligible to take RDAP? and is he eligible to get additional time off if he successfully completes the program? They are two completely different things.

If he had a recent substance abuse problem documented in his PSI report,he should qualify to take RDAP, but his crime will determine if he is also eligible for extra time off. He will probably have to wait until he has 5 years or less left in his sentence before he is assigned to the program.

Question Thank you for your reply

He actually already asked he could do it but it won't take time off because of the fact he was a felon and he had guns but never any violent criminal history

Then taking RDAP without additional time off of his sentence is completely his choice to make.

It should get easier for both of you to deal with the nasty reality of prison over time. Always remember that it will end, and he will be home again.

RDAP is difficult, so most folks I knew who didn't qualify for the extra time off declined the program.
