Default Writing letters from Inside...

Got some mail this week and noticed that my LO was talking about sharing desk time with his cellmate. I don't know where I thought he was ever writing to me from...I sometimes write him while I sitting on the couch or on my bed but it got me thinking. I was wondering if anyone else hears (reads) where they are when they are writing you a letter Or how they divide up the desk time? what are common courtesies shared with someone you have to share a cell with?

You know you have a very valid point.. My ex use to write me and he would tell me where he was writing me at... Most of the time it was in his bed!!!

But with my baby now, well I know he wrote one at work, but IDK all the rest!

When my LOs write me they say they are at "the desk" as well. I asked what desk and the reply was the sit on the toilet and use it as a desk.

Lol! I think my husband has said that too. He has also mentioned being in class while he was writing. Where he was before he got transferred he shared a cell with 7 other guys and he would complain about never having any peace and quiet to write and it made it hard for him to write sometimes.

It’s all about privacy in the attempt to write a letter. A two man cell is as good as it gets in prison. The tables in a two man cell have a stool mounted to the floor in front of the table at the center point. Two man cells also put you in the mood to write. The privacy needed and the ability to focus on your thoughts without the sound of 2-4 televisions blaring or the sound of dominos being slammed on the table to distract you.

If you stay in a dorm like what you see in state jail or a transfer facility, you’re faced with having to write a letter at one the tables in the dayroom and at times that is not an easy effort. Other people are bad about wanting to sit down with you and hang out. The next thing you know, someone else comes up and most often starts a conversation with the first person that sat down. At that point, I pick my paper & pen up and go to another table. Whether anyone uses it or not, there is such a thing as prison etiquette when it comes to that kind of situation.

In a cubicle setting like what you see at trustee camp or an outside dorm inside the fence of an i.d. unit, you can write a letter on a small table mounted to a stand beside your bed. As long as no one walks up on you or interrupts you, it’s quiet enough for the most part.

I see most offenders writing letters at the table behind their rack, or while on the rack itself. I do not see as many sitting on the toilet, more tend to eat there.
