Default A trillion dollars a year for mass incarceration

https://source.wustl.edu/2016/09/cos...-s-1-trillion/

It's from last year but I just now found out about it.

They added up the economic damage to families and communities.

Quote:
“Recent reports highlighting the costs to incarcerated persons, families, and communities have made it possible to estimate the true cost of incarceration,” she said. “This is important because it suggests that the true cost has been grossly underestimated, perhaps resulting in a level of incarceration beyond that which is socially optimal.”

That's really important to stress. Lawmakers have no idea the burden they put on the families when they pass laws dealing with criminal justice & incarceration.

Sure they do. However, the OTHER reality is that the criminal already skipped out on their family obligation when they chose to commit a crime. And this presumes that there was an intact family unit to begin with...statistics tend to bear out that such is often not even the case. As such, if we presume that the criminal was already a deadbeat dad, then his incarceration causes no further financial impact to the household...

I used to hope that the fiscal conservatives would figure out how much of a massive waste of "taxpayers money" and "deficit spending/borrowing" that mass incarceration and a courthouse on every street corner cost our society. Apparently the benefits of locking up so many minority folks makes the trillion dollar cost seem reasonable.

I have read that some rich people have come to the conclusion that it is much too expensive, and are attempting to reduce the waste, like Koch Industries.

If you go to the National Incarceration Association website https://joinnia.com/ there is a counter that shows the cost of incarceration in tax dollars, number of impacted families & number of kids with an incarcerated parent. The numbers are staggering. You can also click on there & tell your story. We need to speak out & start bringing faces to the numbers.

The Koch brothers are working for reform. So are others but they need to hear from us & be reminded that this issue is life changing. If everyone who had a loved one with a conviction spoke up, the noise couldn't be ignored.

For the most part, people want to hear facts but don't change our minds because of facts. Stories that involve us emotionally make us pay attention but also don't necessarily change our minds, especially on beliefs that are strongly held. It's the combination of what one of my political bosses used to call 'human interest' and 'killer facts' that is most likely to have a real political effect.
