Everything can be a gateway drug if you're prone to addiction.

Most people who use MJ won't become addicted to anything, just as most people who use alcohol don't become addicted. Addiction is, as Kirin suggested, not a characteristic of a substance - it's an interaction between a substance, a person and a context or situation. An interesting example is that quite a few US military became heroin users while serving in Vietnam but according to accounts I've read, almost all of them were able to kick the habit once they got home.

I would say the whole field of addiction is not well understood. There's lots of debate about what 'counts' as an addiction - i.e. is a substance addiction the same as, say, a gambling addiction or an addiction to buying shoes? There is a debate as to whether addiction is a medical issue or something other than that. Is a behavior an addiction if it doesn't cause any significant harm? And so on.

Lots of people suffer, and cause suffering, because they can't stop using or doing something that creates harm. No doubt about that. But we need to think more carefully about what is going on in those situations; a common label can be useful but also is often misleading.
