Default Polk Correctional Institution

My boyfriend went to Polk Correctional Institute on Saturday. He doesn't really understand or know what is going on. He thought he was going to be in Morganton or Rutherfordton or Polk County somewhere since his mom lives in Polk County and I live in Buncombe. He was transferred to Polk from Buncombe. I hate this whole mess. I feel like I am out of the loop on everything and that the love of my life has been taken away. He and I have known each other for 4 years now and just started officially dating back in May 08 but off and on dated for almost a year. And now he has been taken away from me. It sucks none to say the least. How do people do it? How can you stay so strong and not hate the world when the person you love is taken by the DOC? How is visitaion at Polk? I have so many questions and no one seems to have any answers. I am so stuck.

1st - Welcome to PTO

2nd - There are many here that will help and answer your questions from actually going through what you are going through right now

3rd - Here is a link to the Family and Friends Handbook - http://www.doc.state.nc.us/Publicati...07handbook.pdf
It may answer some of your questions

So ask all the questions you can think of - try to be specific - there are so many differences in sentences, custody grade, etc that cannot be answered with a general statement.

As for How one can stay so strong - the others here in PTO will be better at that answer. I'm sure many of them will respond!

It's hard sometimes to stay strong but really, what other choice do you have. You can break down, but that won't do any good, especially for him. He needs for you to be strong so he can stay strong!!!! If you have a weak moment, try to do it away from him. I don't have any information on Polk other than what is on the website, but someone on PTO can help answer your questions about that. If I can stay strong honey, anyone can. No, it's not easy at times, but I just want what's best for my loved one that's incarcerated, so you 'll learn to deal!!! Take care.

Is he coming from County? If so they use Polk as a processing camp, meaning he gets processed and then will ship closer to home later if DOC sees fit...this process can take a month to 3months. Call and talk with Jonie Penny...she is the head coordinator for NC transfers. How do we stay strong...prayer, faith, and love. You will make it too if you want to bad enough. Good luck to you both and Welcome to PTO!!

I'm facing time in Polk. It's really used for 18-30 yr old offenders, isn't it? It seems to be one of the better prisons in my opinion though. I just hope that you stay strong, and seeing all of you women on here so devoted to your men just makes me feel so much better about going in and leaving my woman

"Due to the demand of prison space, in 2003, Polk's age criteria for inmates changed from 18-21 year olds to 19-25 year olds."

Not to upset you or anything, but I did time in the NC prison system (and am facing more time) and when I was in, people always referred to Polk as "Gladiator School". Because of all the fighting going on down there. All the young guys thinking they have to prove something or whatever. But, keep your head up, because if he keeps to himself he'll be okay. As long as he isn't a person that irritates others and is a cool dude, he should be okay. Although, if he does get called out, he better not back down or they will fuck with him everyday until he leaves that prison.

Sounds like me might be there just for processing? My son was there for 3 weeks last year for processing. It was July and they had no air conditioning so that was rough. He said the best way to deal with Polk is to do what you are supposed to, keep to yourself and don't make eye contact with the guards. If he does that, he should be fine. My son sat on his bunk most of the day and only spoke to a few people.

Try to hang in there. I know how hard this is for you. I did a lot of crying the first few months but slowly you learn how to cope. You will get through this and so will he. The best way you can support him is to put money on your phone, send him money for canteen and to write him lots of letters. For yourself, stay busy, stay strong, and come to PTO for support.

Have things improved at Polk within the last year? My 20 yr old son may go there for processing until there is a bed at a DART facility. His crimes are all non violent, B&E, larceny. He is NOT a fighter. Very small, meek, quiet type. I am worried
