Default Is it safe to mix Benadryl with meds for psychosis in prison

Some prisons give inmates benadryl with the other psychotic drugs they are taking. Do they just want to knock them out and is this safe. I don't even take benadryl.

My son who has problems with hallucinations as part of his Aspergers has been on Risperdal and in the past has had to take Benedryl for allergies. The Benedryl will make them a little tired, but many times not as much as some of the other medications. I know the Risperdal would put him out. However he can take Benedryl by itself and be okay! Also, the pharmacist said the only thing the Benedryl might do is make the other meds less effective.

They had my son on lithuim and benadryl and he got very sick. It still has not been determined that he needs anything like risperdal. It seems they give all the inmates the same thing and they are not all the same. He does not have allergies.

Its pretty common to prescribe Benadryl along with other mental health meds, and not just in prisons. Benadryl might be used to help a patient sleep, or as a light anti-anxiety medication. Benadryl might be prescribed to someone with addiction issues because it does not cause dependency (whereas some other sleep or anti-anxiety meds do).

my fiance was in Orange county jail. On his psych meds. (wellbutrin, risprodol, and they gave him benedryl to sleep.) it didn't effect him at all he was doing very well with it. then all of a suden they stopped his meds and it about drove him crazy. Now that he is in prison hopefully they will start his meds once again
