Love Joe's site. I love the article on modern day slaves. You do know we are all slaves the the big gorilla We just have a little more freedom but they do have a hold on the majority of our stuff. They are always the third party in our life even our children when you get married. If it has a certificate it is partially owned/governed by the government!

Question I need some advice from you guys

I haven't spoken with Joe in AGES. Why? I’ve been out of touch with him because I haven’t paid the magicJack renewal fee. I don’t want to use my personal debit card to do it.

Does ANYONE know how I can purchase a prepaid Visa card with $29.95 on it? I have found cards for Pizza Hut, Best Buy, etc., but no plain ol’ Visa cards. And I do NOT want to give access to my bank account nor fill out a loan application in order to get the card.

I just want to hand over $29.95 in cash (plus any fee involved) and have a Visa card that I can use ONE TIME ONLY. Does anyone have any advice?

I have several ideas. One is that some banks have disposable debit card numbers for things like this. Check on line with your bank and credit cards, they probably offer such a service. Next, money order? Paypal? I know you can buy cards and load them. Usually at the grocery store or walmart has stuff like that. Good luck, you need to get that phone on.

I agree, look at the grocery store, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc... Usually they have a whole bunch of gift cards in one spot. They should have some pre-paid Visa and Mastercards, as well as Green Dot cards available. Good luck!

Green dot is actually a great option. I have my paychecks direct deposited on one. And NEVER had any problems with it except that if you want to use it repeatedly there is a monthly charge. I know wal mart carries just plain prepaid visa and mastercards too.

if using the prepaid visa cards check about any fees they may tack on for using it. might have to put maybe 35.00 on the card and you can still use the rest until it runs out for any store

I wish I had read your post BEFORE I purchased a card from a local grocery store. Unfortunately, magicJack tacked on an additional $1.44 fee to the $29.95. So now I have to go BACK to the grocery store and pay ANOTHER $3.95 to add another $1.44 to my Visa card so that I can pay the magicJack subscription. <sigh>

Joe probably thinks I've abandoned him...

Smile A new post, but...

It's sorta from BOTH of us. I found an old letter from Joe that he wrote to me when he was only nine years old. It's short, but it's SO Joe! Check it out at Vintage Joe.

Thank you Pepsi! "Vintage Joe" is so funny! I hope you hear from Joe soon. Did you send him a note telling him the phone's back on?

Nope, because the phone is STILL not on! I didn't know about an extra $1.44 fee that magicJack tacked on to the $29.95 renewal fee, so now I have to go back to the grocery store and spend an additional $3.95 to add $1.44 more to the prepaid Visa card. Bleh.

PepsiAddict

P.S. - Help me remember to update Joe's "A Penny Saved" post with the increased magicJack renewal fees. (I've heard that they now charge to change your phone number. It used to be FREE to do that.)

Pepsi! Omg Joe is your LO! My LO and I are big fans of Joe! We've been reading his blog since my LO's charges came up last year! We thoroughly enjoy every one. I told my LO I would print the new ones out and send them to him. We think what you guys are doing is revolutionary and so important! This world is so black and white when it comes to SO's and you guys are educating them that while yes some SO's are monsters most of them are just good people who made a bad choice. Thank you so much for your blog and all of the info you've shared with me. I can't wait to read more and send it to my LO. Joe is in my prayers as are you Pepsi.

Unhappy magicJack blues

In case you were wondering, magicJack no longer works for Joe and me. Joe has been asking around, and other inmates are experiencing the same thing.

I wasted $50 in renewing my magicJack subscription and changing the phone number, trying to fix the problem. The BOP has figured out how to block calls to magicJack phone numbers.

Before anyone asks, I can't use Google Voice, either. Joe told me that Google Voice has been specifically prohibited -- in writing -- for use by federal inmates. If he's caught calling a GV number, there could be consequences for BOTH of us!

I had gotten used to Joe calling me nearly every day. Guess we'll have to go back to once-a-week calling again. <sigh>

This is so bizarre, my lo has told his counselor and he doesn't care. However, I had an idea. Can you add a phone to your family plan of cell phones for like 10 dollars, and get that phone with the area code and prefix that you need.

Awww man! I was hoping you'd be up and running with your magicJack calls. I never could get a number for the area where my brother's prison is on MJ. I considered adding a local cell line for $10/mo with a number in his area code if I could do that.... but we really can't add any other expenses, and right now we don't voice chat much anyway-we email daily though.

Thanks for the idea! I just have to decide if I want to commit to an additional $120/yr on top of the money I already send him each month, and the money I'm saving for his housing expenses once he's released and for a decent used car (with the help of the generous people who tip the blog from time to time).

I don't know if you put money on his books, but the cost of the calls might be only 5 per month, once all if figured out. I know that is what I will do if they change their guidelines where my lo is at...

Hey, Beach!

I spoke with Joe today, and he sounded pretty good, all things considered. He said he'd have a new post for the blog next week. Yay!

Thanks for the sweet words. So, (in my best "Joey from Friends" voice): How YOU doin'? (I know you heard Joey's voice when you read that!)

You can buy a prepaid GIFTCARD Visa at Kroger checkout for $50.00 so you make your purchase and spend the change on gas or something
