When on lockdown, do they get out of their cells at all? Any updates on whether magazines will be delivered? Also, are envelopes used as currency, the same as stamps?

It's my understanding that they are in their cells 23.5 hrs a day - only coming out for breakfast (given a bag lunch on the way back from breakfast) and dinner. Possibly to shower 2x a week.

Anything is tradeable. My son keeps sending letters with weird stamps on strange envelopes and when I asked him he said he traded the "clean" stamps & envelopes for other items & "dirty" envelopes??? Not sure what dirty means as they all mail the same but......

I completely forgot to ask my son if he was still getting his magazines - the hour flew by so quickly.

Default Hispanics in Reception and Lockdown

Thanks, but my question was whether he could possibly be in another unit in Reception. He told me not to write him in any specific unit because they can be moved around. So I was wondering if he might be in another unit that is not in lockdown. I don't know the layout of Reception, how many units there are, whether all Hispanics in Reception are in Badger and/or Donner. Couldn't actually find it on the Internet, either. I don't know whether what I read here about Reception Hispanics in Badger and Donner automatically applies to him.

Does anyone know why whites in reception - Badger unit - are on lockdown again? I went to visit my son on Saturday and was turned away as they had gone on lockdown again.

Every week I post the lockdown status for this prison, so that families are aware of the status of their LO.. Unfortunately lockdowns are common in prison.
I hope that your son will be off lockdown soon..

Hopefully your husband is not in reception Badger or Donner as all hispanics and whites are on lockdown as of this morning. All other programs are normal.

The number to call is: 1-800-374-8474. It is a statewide number and you need to listen to the prompts to get to San Quentin. I press #1 then #2 then #1 and it will give you current status. It is suggested that you call right before you leave - sam day as visit - to verify lockdown status. I did not do that last time - only checked the afternoon before and l was turned away at the desk.

Good Luck!

Is this still the same lockdown that began in February 2012 (of Hispanics in Badger)? Does anyone have any idea how long this could last? My son has been in lockdown since arrival in March. He was looking forward to seeing the sky and breathing some fresh air in the yard, after a year of lockdown in County Jail. I'm just wondering if anyone has any "inside" information about this lockdown. I try to think of it as a way of keeping people safe, but I would love to visit him while he's still in Reception because the prison is near me.

Hi Marie,

I am sorry your son is still on lockdown. I know how bedly I want to visit my son and you must feel the same. My son has been in since Dec (not Hispanic) and has been on lockdown the majority of the time. It seems that every time they all get off of lockdown something happens and they go RIGHT BACK ON IT!! These men are frustrated... I too was just hoping my son could see something other than the inside of his cell and also resigned myself to the fact that they would be safer on lockdown. I googled San Quentin and saw an overhead view of how darn crowded the reception yards are and became quite fearful for my son's safety It is completely unpredictable. Is your son in Badger Unit? I think the visiting officers could let you know if you call during appt times and then if he is not in Badger you could set an appointment....just a thought.

Default Long lockdowns

Thanks for your response! I'm sorry for your son, too, and for all the guys who are locked down without relief. But as you said, they probably are safer. I think I will probably have to resign myself to no visits the whole time he is in Reception, although I will keep checking. I found the # to the Information Officer and found out he is in Badger. Now I'm looking for the 800 Hotline # again. (The wrong # was posted in the Lockdown section by someone. I know the correct # is somewhere, but I misplaced it--if you have it, could you post it and I will put it in my phone?).

Hi BobbieWifey.....it should be OK. I would ask when making your visiting appt. just to be sure. But, it sounds like your loved one should be clear for a visit.
Please remember, anything can happen with lockdowns.

Default Whites in North Block on lock down

I just got a call and he told me the whites in north block are on lock down. There was an incident on the yard and a white guy was beat up by some other white guys. He didn't know who it was though.

Does anyone know anything about EAST BLOCK YARD 5? Are they on lockdown? My last letter I got from my boyfriend (received yesterday), was dated July 5th, and he said they had just got a memo saying they were on modified visits, calls, canteen and packages, and had no yard. But he thought it was bull and didnt seem to think the calls would get affected. I was supposed to get my call today and I didn't. Super bummed.
