Thumbs up Has your loved one taken any vocational courses (trade) while in jail?

I think its great that many prisons offer so many vocational courses that an inmate can take to better themselves while theyre incarcerated it makes it so much easier for an inmate to come home and become a normal member of society

does the prison your loved one is in offer any courses and if so have they taken advantage of any of them

Mine got he GED a couple of times. He has done fire fighting, and got his ministers license. He was the only guy in the whole prison of 5000 inmates to graduate for the Relapse Prevention Program and has earned numerous other certificates awards and trainings. This bid he spends holding Bible studies and mentoring inmates on how to better their lives, set goals and complete goals...I am really proud of him.

Ray has been inside for over 17 years (this time) and he has gotten his G.E.D and "certificates" for General Office, Food Service, AutoCad and he graduates on the 20th of this month in a Multi Media class (he learned to build websites). I am not sure what he wants to take next, he still has just under 3 years. I am guessing that when he gets out, he will have to take MAYBE 3 general classes and he will probably have a B.A. Degree in Communications. I am VERY PROUD of him.

They offer classes at the state facilities here in AZ, but you have to meet certain criteria in order to take them, for example, you can't be convicted of any aggravated or violent charges, I don't think you can have any dangerous drug violations, and probably a whole plethora of other dumb things that wouldn't make one eligible (violent offenders and drug violations deserve to be able to take classes too, IMHO!) Unfortunately, my other half doesn't "qualify" to take any of the state funded classes, but he is allowed to take correspondence classes through a local community college.

He just recently registered for a business course and was awarded a scholarship...I'm so very proud of him! After that, he's hoping to be able to take an electrical course.

My honey signed up for a vocational class where he's at and it has turned out to be a complete joke and a complete waste of time. If this is any indication on how our Bureau of Prisons treats education on a whole, it's pathetic. My LO already has a degree and was wanting to take classes to further his education and to learn new trades. I'm sad that education is not a priority.

Needless to say, my U.S. Senator is hearing about it.

Glad for those of you that have had a positive experience but sad for others like my LO who are having just the opposite.

There's certain units that allow inmates to take courses at nearby community colleges

I guess I have two answers to this question. My babe got his GED while in and is looking into some welding classes. He's taking some other classes right now like life skills etc.

For those who have LO in a facility where they can earn a degree- I would HIGHLY recommend they encourage their LO to take advantage of it. Where my husband is, he has taken many classes / courses through Costal Bend College- but none of them are degree related. He has always taken classes to keep busy and always sends me his certificates. He has taken carpentry, HVAC and welding. Right now he's currently enrolled in the HVAC apprenticeship program. Which is great, but welding is what his heart is set on. We already know its going to be VERY hard for him to find a job, so we are going to go the "self employed" route, our game plan is to get him a work truck that he can weld out of. They pay very well here in DFW area, you can get by on just one income doing that. Our back up plan is him going the HVAC route, but the welding will bring in more $$$$

My fiance is currently taking the electricians vocational class. He only has a couple more months left of it and then he's going to try to get a job working in industry (making license plates) and then taking college classes at night for general studies. I'm so happy he's got a plan while he's in there. Anything to keep them busy and out of trouble is worth it though, by far!
