The Case Manage Coordinator can get him a new card. During the meal there should be someone there that can help him. Worse case scenario if this happens again they will make a new one for $5.00. Lots of times guys sell there card so they can eat twice etc. the card id issue is usually a big mess!

Default Headed to USP Atlanta, have a question

I received my letter this week. It sated I was going to USP Atlanta SCP.

Does the SCP indicate I will be going to the Camp?

I know USP Atlanta is a transition prison, is it possible I will be there only for intake then moved closer to home?

I have read some older post about overcrowding and bed shortage; is this still true?

I also posted this in the SS section, so sorry for the extra post, many views, no answers.

Thanks!

Default USP ATLANTA- email

Does anyone know if "they" are allowed to use the email system while in the "hole"? Do the guys share email accounts amongst one another? Can they receive & keep incoming mail?

@SmokieBear80... yes they have an email system at USP Atlanta. Through a company called Corrlinks.com. You must set up an account on there by way of your personal email address. Really simply to do. You person has to set-up the finacial arrangement on his side (the inside). i.e. move money from his account over to the email system. Or something like that. But I havent known it to be any cost to me on my end. Good luck.

Default Any info on USP ATLANTA?! -_-

So my fiancee was finally sent to USP-ATLANTA after serving a year&a half of a 114month sentence& so far I'm only hearing bad things about this place.I haven't heard from him,I found out he was there on the BOP site. This place is like 6 hours from our home, but it COULD be worst...I pray that he isn't just in a holdover facility&that they DON'T have intentions of sending him further I just have no idea what to expect...does anyone have experience with this facility? I'll take ALLLLL advice, opinions, situations,&help!lol thanks in advance.

He could either be designated there, or be in holdover status. He might be able to find out which from his counselor. When I was there on holdover for 28 days, visits were not allowed until after you were there for 30 days, so if you can visit earlier, it might mean he will stay there.

Holdover was extremely nasty, but I don't know anything about the rest of the prison.

Angry Byron's going to Atlanta USP-medium

So yet another move and never once closer than 1,000 miles to home. Now, we'll be back at over 3,000.
I'd appreciate some information on the facility. About how long before they have access to email, how is it there in medium? Anything at all is appreciated. Do they have MP3's there yet?
Byron goes from "medium points" to "low points" in December and they move him clear across the United States. How stupid are the Feds??? In 16 years, he was within 1,000 miles for four of those years. Man...we've got four years left. What more can they do to us to tear our family apart????
Thanks for listening fellow PTO'ers!!!

ByzMom,

I've moved your post to the USP Atlanta forum. Take some time to browse the forum for answers while you're waiting for responses. Perhaps there is some information that will be helpful.

I'm sorry they moved him so far from home, but that is business as usual for the bop (I went from 1200 miles to 2500 miles away myself). I was only in the Atlanta holdover, so I don't know the answers to your questions though.

ByzMom,

My boyfriend has been in USP Atlanta for about 8 months now. I have visited him once already, and will be visiting him again in a couple of weeks. I can tray to answer any questions that you might have about the place.

He should have access to email within a couple of days of being assigned a cell. You will have to give him your email address, and log on to www.corrlinks.com and create an account. He will sign you up on his side, and you will receive an email to validate it, and then you will be able to exchange email. There is about a 1 hour delay before either of you gets the email that the other sends. It costs 6 cents a minute ($3.60 an hour) for him to use the computer, and he'll have access from around 6/7am until 10pm.

I'm not sure how to answer the "how is it in Medium" question. It is crowded, but at most he'll be in a 3 man cell. When he first got there, my bf said that the food was better than any of the other places that he had traveled through, but now he complains about how bad it is (but I suspect he just wants me to send him more $$ for commissary). They seem to get locked down because of a fight about once every week or two, but the lockdown is usually no more than a half a day. As long as your son keeps his head down, he should be able to stay out of the trouble.

Yes, they just recently got MP3s. I'm not sure how expensive the players are, but the songs are $1.60 each.

If your son likes Swiss Rolls, he is out of luck. The commissary has quit selling them (and is claiming that Little Debbie has discontinued them, which is not true). I only throw that in there because I have had to listen to my bf complain about it at least a dozen times over the last month.

If you have any other questions, let me know and I will try to answer.

Atlanta USP is getting a new warden - Darlene Drew. She's been the Warden at Bennettsville FCI. From what I've read in the past about Warden Drew, you all have my sympathies. She likes long lockdowns, doesn't like inmates going shirtless, and is generally portrayed to be a hard ass.

Default away from USP-Atl for over a year, but...

My first encounters with the federal prison system were at USP-Atlanta. My husband was there for several years. We were even married there. He was transferred last year, but he still has many friends there, and from what they are saying, not much has changed since I had been visiting. Sooooo, here's my two cents.

The staff at USP-Atlanta is a very strange mix. It's rumored that staff are sent there for disciplinary action. Some are tolerable. A few are nice. Most seem to be bitter at the world, and one or two are simply out to "get" you. I would visit the maximum times allowed/month, and it was not very difficult for me since I lived less than 15minutes away from the facility, and I was aware of the dress code. There were a few times when the queue to get in was rather long and they made us wait outside in the cold until the queue was reduced, but overall, getting processed and ready to be escorted upstairs only took about 20 - 30 minutes tops. As long as you are aware of the colors which aren't allowed (at the time they were white, grey, and khaki), your shoes MUST have a heel strap (no flip flop or open back shoes--and they will make you lift your pants legs to prove your shoes have either a strap or a full coverage back), and your tops had to have sleeves (short sleeves were okay as long as when your arms are extended out from your body, your underarm area wasn't exposed), and no low cut/cleavage bearing shirts. They said the clothes could not be skin-tight, but it was nearly impossible to go to a visit without seeing ladies in ultra skinny jeans. No jackets or sweaters were allowed. No shorts for men or women. Women were allowed to wear capris.

As someone pointed out, you're allowed to embrace upon greeting and leaving. Other than that, there was no contact allowed. Only visitors were allowed at the snack machines. The restrooms were poorly maintained. They rarely had soap, and when they did, it was USED hotel-sized bar soaps that were already wet and tiny from other people having used them. YUCK!

Because they had limited visitation per week, it seemed the visiting room stayed crowded. There were plenty of times where visitors were asked to leave to make space for other visits. There was only ONE video conference available on the general population visiting floor, so if someone was waiting for a video visit, your visit would be limited to an hour. However, depending on staff, if no one was waiting, it was possible to spend 2-4hours on the video conference with your loved one in the special housing unit.

There is nothing cozy about the facility, however, it seemed relatively safe. There was always issues with the heating or air not working when it was needed. Bedspace was limited. There were 3-man cells, especially in the SHU. I heard about the roaches and mice. There were very limited programs/classes offered. Lockdowns were infrequent and they didn't last for more than a day 95% of the time. There seemed to be less tension between the races/groups there, and honestly, at times, I felt like the neighboring area outside the prison was more dangerous than the prison itself but overall, it wasn't a terrible place.

They do have MP3s there now and they've had email for a few years. As long as the final goal (doing one's time) is kept in mind, and you accept that it's prison and not a country club, USP-Atlanta is tolerable.

It was difficult getting relocation approved to Atlanta upon release for my husband. I was told that too many people want to be released to Atlanta, so they make the process rather difficult. One has to really establish ties to Atlanta to even be considered.

Hope that helps.

Default Atlanta USP on lockdown?

I haven't heard from my bf since Tuesday afternoon (we normally talk/email several times a day). I finally called the prison last night and was told that they are on lockdown.

Has anybody heard what is going on there? Normally they are only locked down for a few hours, or maybe overnight. This is the first time in a long time that they have been locked down for multiple day.

Not sure if anybody even reads this thread, but I have an update on the lockdown.

I got a very short (2 minute) call from my bf this morning. They were being let out for an hour to shower. They are being told that they will be locked down until at least Sunday.

The official reason that they are being told is that it is to quarantine/contain a virus that has been going around... but he says that the virus has been going around for a couple of months and seems to have pretty much run it's course. He suspects that it is more likely related to the inmate that overdosed and died (while his friends watched and did nothing to help. Sounds like a suicide to me?), and/or to the fight that occurred on Monday/Tuesday.
