Question Can you tell me about Northwest Florida Reception Center in Chipley, FL?

My son was just transferred to NWFRC Annex on Wednesday and I am clueless about what is happening. Can anyone give me any advice or information regarding this place. If he had a battery on a leo is he even qualified for work release? He is in for 18 months and served 3 at the Santa Rosa County jail. Any tips or suggestions for my sanity would be appreciated.

I have lived in Chipley for about 4 months. I have no info for you about the prison, but I can tell you there are 3 nice hotels right as you come into Chipley and about every fast food place you can think off. The prices they advertize is for mon through fri, then they jack the prices up to around $80

There is a Waffle House just past the hotels on the left, that gets you good waffles for under $5. I practically lived there while I was house hunting. Nice people, State Patrol and local police go there, all nice people that will help you.

My finace has been at NWFRC Main Unit for about 10 months, he hasn't had any problems, thank God, so it seems that as long as they behaive everything should be ok, my fiance is in for a Non-Violent crime so I'm not sure how Work Release goes for Violent Offenders, if you have any pacific questions please don't hesitate to ask, I answer what I can...

My husband was transferred from the Annex (which is where your son is) yesterday. He spent a very long five weeks there. If you can set up your phone so he can call and see about putting money into his trust account. I will be happy to help you if you need it in setting that up. I made many phone calls for people while my husband was there.

My husband didn't have any real problems with the place. Other than some of the guards have obvious attitude problems. They also were not allowing them the full 20 minutes to eat and not allowing them a daily change of clothing. I have since been in contact with a Major there and the meal times have increased to the 20 minutes but my husband left before he could discover if the day by day clothing change was done. Let me know because I'm not done with trying to encourage them to do the right thing even though my husband is no longer there. I've also reported one guard for turning off the phones and TV an hour early and another one though I couldn't name him because he turns his badge around. This one would call inmates trash, belittle them and call them liars. If they wish to reduce the recidivism rate as they claim and cognitive thinking is one ways of doing this and supposedly this starts at the CO level, well they need to alter the COs cognitive thinking. But my husband said there were some decent guards there.

My husband was also in the Santa Rosa County Jail. My husband may or may not have known him. He was there from April 25-July 30th. Did he get the 90 days credit? If so he will do 15 months DOC and if he stays out of trouble should be home in about 12.

Feel free to email me privately. I'll be happy to help you and give you my telephone number.

Yes, you will need a landline. DOC does not allow calls to cell phones (I don't think they realized it's almost 2011 yet). Check out the FL phones forum for info about setting up an account.

And Welcome to PTO!

Default Visitation Application and Phone list (NWFRC)

If your love one is at NWFC, can you tell me how long it took for your visitation and phone list to be approved?

Also any information or tips about visitation at this facility would be much appreciated.

thanks

My husband has been at the annex about 6 month and was in the main unit 3 months. He hasnt had much problems at the annex. its air conditioned and there appears to be less fights there. we talk every night. my phone list and visitation was approved within two weeks. visitation isnt bad there. it is much more relaxed than the main unit was. i usually get there at 0730. the process isnt not to bad. As for the cell phone comment, that is incorrect. i had to submit a verizon cellphone bill that shows the bill is in my name and the phone number was on the bill. that was what they told us to send. It MUST be a contract cell phone. they will not allow the cellphone that you pay for minutes too. it has to be one you have a year or two contract on. we have talked for a year on it and my cell phone has been approved twice with no problems. once you are approved, you add it to your securus phone account.

I'll be flying into Fl from Co. in 2 weeks with my 12 yr old son. He hasn't seen his dad in 6 yrs! Can my son wear t-shirts with skulls or wings/crosses? Will they pat him down in a Seperate room or what? Is the visitation usually severely busy there? I'm not sure what time to show up? I'm kinda panicking that I won't be ready for something! Can anyone give me important info about visits there. I've had one visit only 2.5 yrs ago and I know places are different. Thank you in advance!

Default Northwest Reception

Main unit OR Annex?

I have only visited a the main unit, not the annex.

They do separate the males and females into separate rooms for pat downs.

With the clothing, I would bring a separate set of clothes just in case as a back up, better safe than sorry. There should be some guidelines on the visitation application about the clothing policy. I have heard of people being turned away because of their clothing who had to go to the local walmart (its about 15 miles away) to get alternative clothing.

I checked in around 8:45am and there were plenty of people already in the visitation room when we signed in and went through security. So I would suggest that you get there as soon as early as you can. I believe they start letting people at 8:15. I did notice by 11am, the visitation room was fairly packed and almost all seats in side were taken. However, you can go outside to the pavillon area if you want to walk around and get fresh air.

Each person can bring up to 50.00. Bring it in a clear plastic baggie, they will carefully count this and record exactly how much money you bring in (they also record any jewelry that you are wearing). There is about 2 or 3 vending machines but you also can purchase snacks from the food park. I thought the options were decent, but if you have any specific questions about the food options, let me know. The guys can use also use their canteen account to purchase items for their visitors if they have money on the books.

If you want to take pictures, I believe they are about 2 dollars each and I would suggest you take pictures early because I noticed towards the end of visitation the lines were pretty long for the pictures.

Hope you have a great visit, if you have any more questions , let us know.

This is all I can add:

If he's 12 and scared, they will allow you to watch. If not, ask for the OIC. Say it just like that. It's the Officer In Charge, and ask why you can not witness your son's shake down since he is only 12. But, you shouldn't have any issue. None of the facilities have ever give me grief over my 11 year old. TAKE THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE. up to 13 they need a birth certificate, 13 to 16 a state ID and at 16 they have to be approved on the visit list just like you and me.

Skulls and wings/crosses: well, Cage has worn a black shirt I got him at the mall with crosses and wings...but, there was so much on the shirt I doubt they noticed. If it can be mistook for anything gang related or indecent, leave it at the house. Check out this visitation rule here: 33-601.723 and here's the second page of the visit application that hardly no one ever gets with the application here: 33-601.715 (you want to click on part 2 of 2 on the left hand side of page Ref 04758 DC6-111B Visitor Information Summary)

I can't think of anything else, that's not to say there isn't anything it's just a lot of it is old hand to us...but, if you have been to a Florida Facility within the past 3 years you know most. It's the little details and facility specific ticks that you need and the way things change...it may be different today than it was last weekend...but, this is the jest of it.

NO CAMO! NOT PINK, WINTER OR ANY OTHER KIND. My grandson had florescent colored tennis shoes and they made me go to Walmart because the colors were painted on like camo. FLORESCENT COLORS! I might have won that one with the OIC, but you will learn to pick your battles. And, baby's tennis shoes were not worth me going over her head and making an enemy to me that day.

I wish you a smooth, good visit. Let us know what we forgot or any changes you notice...
