Default First time offenders. Early release question.

This is my first time ever being here so forgive me if this has been answered already.

I have a friend who is in jail for theft and fraud. Was given 16months in prison. She is a first time offender and i was wondering about information on early releases.

Are there any early releases? I heard about a 50% reduction for serving time for first time offenders that was just passed August 14th 2009 i think. Could use any info to confirm this.

Is there anything that she can do or i can do to help reduce the time she is to spend in jail? Classes, seminars, etc...

Any information and links would be greatly appreciated. I will check back from time to time.

I think in Arizona, as it's kind of close, I'm somewhat familiar with the laws, the Offender that's in for the first felony will only do 50% unless it's a violent classified offense. Any pre-sentence confinement time granted by the Judge should also come off. She can speak to a caseworker in the facility she's at who can give her a much better timeline than anything I could guess at really though. And, regardless of how long she's inside, she should get something out of it instead of just cooling her heels. Get an education or something to help her with regards to employability upon her release. Those are both things that would reduce her time if she shows an interest in bettering herself.

Thanks. So all she has to do is talk to a caseworker for this information about doing only 50% of her time?

Caseworker, jail lawyer or maybe one of the CO's. I'm pretty sure that 50% is the standard but I can't be for sure. If I recall correctly, Arizona's DOC web site will give a projected "out date" for the Offender. Check with that.
