UNICOR Furniture Factory Closed Down at Sheridan FCI
UNICOR has shut down its furniture factory at FCI Sheridan and so about 100 prisoners are out of work. My husband being one of them. He hasn't been unemployed for 24 years - this'll be a change! I think they should just let him come home and get a real job. Z.
Mrs. Bike- No, they aren't giving seniority to those who've already worked for UNICOR when hiring for the new "call center" they say will begin at some point. (Maybe after the first of the year.) The prisoners have to apply along with everyone else and take some type of skills testing. If hired, he'd have to start at a lower pay scale than where he's worked up to in UNICOR thus far. The "call center" will be a very different job than the physical labor in his previous jobs. But he's gonna try for it and that's the best he can do. I guess it's just a dose of the "real world" where companies close down and lay off their employees. Only I don't think he's been offered any "severance pay." Z.

Tell your hubby to practice on any typewriter he can between now and then. They will test him on a computer keyboard and then his speed will be faster and he will have a better shot at a job. Also in Tally when they were going from furniture to the data thing inmates could put a cop-out in for a week of typing practice. They had so few qualify the first few weeks they actually started a 2 week 4 hour a day class and then you could retest.

He's taking a class now that's an hour a day that's a keyboarding program called "Mavis Teaches Typing" or something like that. I keep sending him cartoons about typing, to keep his spirits up. My favorite was one about the "Typing Emerson Family" which pictures this family (like the TV family of the 1950's) holding typing competitions for fun. Z.
