Default Prison education documentary

Over a Thanksgiving weekend, you can watch the first part in a 4 part documentary series about the Bard Prison Initiative(BPI). BPI is a program at Bard College that brings college into various prisons in NY. The degree that students earn is the same degree that students in the free world earn.

The doc follows a number of BPI students through their program, offered to a limited number of students at Eastern and at a max women's prison. So, if you wanted to know what it was like to try to get a degree behind bars, it is worth a gander.

BPI is in it's 20th year. At the same time that Berkeley was pulling out of its San Quentin program because the Tough on Crime politics pulled all Pell grant money from prisoner access, Bard developed the BPI. It is one of a number of schools that have done this - Grinnell in Iowa, a school in WA, a few in IN - all over. So, if you were thinking, “but my LO isn,t at Eastern” and you think your LO could qualify, check around you - there might be a program in your state. If not, with Pell grants again available to many prisoners, you might be able to get people together to persuade a nearby college or university to offer classes and programs in your LO's prison.

Anyway, check out
