Prison head wants escape investigated

ATLANTA - State Corrections Commissioner James Donald has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to find out how three death row inmates were able to plan an escape attempt at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

Andrew Grant DeYoung, Michael Wade Nance and David Scott Franks - all convicted killers - accumulated a number of items, including saw blades, cash, welding material and a map of Georgia. They cut through wall air vents in their cells and slipped into a passageway.

The plan was foiled when officers at the prison pulled a string attached to one of the vents, causing it to come apart and reveal the opening.
