VA Republican Gillespie Launches Attack Against Felon Restoration of Rights

RICHMOND — Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie on Monday launched a TV ad claiming that Democrat Ralph Northam made it easier for violent felons and sex offenders to get their hands on guns.

The ad is based on outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s sweeping actions to restore voting and other civil rights to felons. In one of the few states that permanently disenfranchises felons, McAuliffe (D) has restored the right to vote and to serve on juries to more than 168,000 felons who have completed their sentences. His action also helped them over the first hurdle to have their gun rights restored, although the felons still need judges to sign off.

Let's hope felons in Virginia show up to vote next week in droves...

Democrat Ralph Northam was projected to win Virginia’s race for governor Tuesday over Republican Ed Gillespie, as Democrats appeared headed for a big night across the board in races for lieutenant governor, attorney general and several key seats in the House of Delegates, based on exit polls and early returns.

Now Trump is tweeting, blaming Gillespie's loss on not embracing him hard enough.

Former felons head to the polls in Virginia with the future of rights restoration on the line

Many voted for the first or second time ever on Tuesday.

The precarious state of voting rights in Virginia was on Bahar and other former felons’ minds Tuesday as they cast a ballot for the next governor. Tens of thousands of former felons still have not had their rights restored, and the next governor will decide the fate of people coming out of the criminal justice system in the future. Democrat and current Lieutenant Gov. Ralph Northam has said he will continue McAuliffe’s effort to restore rights to everyone who has served their time. Republican Ed Gillespie first said he would appoint someone to study the issue and standardize the process, leaving his position up in the air. But recently he attacked Northam for his position, calling it “reckless.”

I just read where the Democrat candidate won yesterday's VA Governor's race. It is being billed as Trump's first election defeat.

Lots of wins last night.

Sounds like Democrats re-took the Washington state Senate as well.

That makes 27 state legislative flips for Democrats in 2017. A true referendum against Trump.

Looking forward to next year's national mid-terms... and the 2020 election beyond. ;)

These are normal variations in mid-terms. Don't get all confident! Trump's tiny thumb and big gaffes are certainly on the scale, pushing people away, but it can always change, especially as turn-out goes up, which is what everyone will be working for in the next couple of years.
