TDCJ medical neglect
Reminder: Chad Bennett TDCJ # Wynne Unit Huntsville,
Texas Guys, this alert is for our friend and colleague Brenda Bennett's son, but so far Brenda and Shirley are the only ones who seem to have written on his behalf. Chad suffers from several mental and physical illnesses which make his life painful and frightening. He's not getting any treatment for these. Let's help. Thanks, Phillipa JEFF DICKS MEDICAL COALITION URGENT ALERT Date of alert: 27th June 2002 Expiry date of alert: 26th July 2002 Contacts for alert: Phillipa Chantry & Brenda Bennett Jeff Dicks Medical Coalition PO Box 343 Beechgrove, TN 37018 / Issues: Medical neglect of Texas inmate, inhumane punishment Background: Chad Ray Bennett # age 28, is an inmate at the Wynne Unit in Huntsville, Texas. He has served six years of a seven year sentence. Throughout this entire period, Chad's family informs us, he has gone without adequate medical treatment or had any special arrangements made for the following medical conditions: · Bipolar Disorder (a serious mental illness); · SHU Syndrome (a mental illness resulting from the extreme isolation and sensory deprivation of maximum security prison housing units); · Lyme Disease (a disease caused by bacterial infection that is easily treatable in the earlier stages, but more serious in advanced cases where adequate treatment has not been provided, as is the case with Chad); · Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar requiring monitoring of glucose levels and careful attention to diet); · Back injury and · Asthma. Chad's family and their family doctor have contacted prison officials repeatedly over the past six years requesting that he receive medical attention. So far, however, there has been no meaningful response. ACTION: 1) Contact some or all of the officials listed below: · Expressing concern that inmate Chad Ray Bennett # has been denied medical treatment and TDCJ is guilty of medical neglect for his severe mental illnesses caused by TDCJ as Dr. Terry Kupers diagnoised from TDCJ's medical malpractice, Lyme Disease, hypoglycemia, back injury and asthma for a period of six years despite repeated requests for assistance from the inmate himself, his family, and the family doctor; · Urging that Chad be provided with medical treatment for the above conditions as a matter of urgency. This treatment should involve not only prison medical staff (who have ignored requests for help), but appropriate external specialists in order to ascertain and treat the effects of six years of medical neglect. All medication and special dietary or other arrangements recommended should be provided to Chad promptly, reliably and free of charge; · Urging a review of prison health services and policies to establish why this medical neglect has continued for so long, whether any other inmates are experiencing similar problems in accessing treatment, and ensuring that such lapses do not reoccur; · Urging a review of conditions of confinement so that they meet the special needs of the large numbers of inmates with mental illness. Such inmates will behave better and be less likely to reoffend if they are given access to professional assessment, treatment and counselling and are not placed in harsher prison conditions such as solitary confinement; · Asking to be updated on Chad's condition; · Thanking the official for their time. 2) Send copies of your letters and any replies received to Phillipa and Brenda at the Jeff Dicks Medical Coalition. 3) Send Chad a nice card or letter to let him know that people care about him. 4) Post this urgent alert (CC to Phillipa and Brenda) to anyone else you think might be interested in writing letters. 5) Visit our website at www.jeffdicks.org and consider whether you would like to become more involved in our work for inmates suffering from medical neglect. It doesn't matter what state or country you live in. 6) Print out copies of our latest newsletter from the website and send them to your inmate contacts. Give them our address in case they need help with medical neglect. 7) Consider sending us a donation of cash, US stamps or stationery to: P.O. Box 55 Fate, Texas 75040. I am writting in regards to my concerns for my son, Inmate Chad Ray Bennett TDCJ # 790798 Wynne Unit Huntsville Texas 77349. Many of our private doctors have called and written you in concern of my sons deteriating health due to his deteriating health from Lyme and his bulls eye skin lesions ( which is the evidence of Lyme Disease) which are still untrteated after my five years of begging you to treat him before it was too late. Chad is also in the heat which is deadly for Lyme Disease people. This is a very contagious disease through salavia or body fludids. I have told this story on my radio talk show every day and have many concerned inmates parents in fear of this fatal disease. Please read these sites below regarding Lyme Disease which shold help even the most uneducated ignorant doc regarding Lyme Disease. We have been told that the many doctors in Texas Prison System have had their license taken from them for many different reasons yet still practice medicine on our loved ones. I am sending this to Texas Medical Board also in concern of this. Please let us know if this is true? You may contact our private doctors at: Dr. Hamid Moayad at: 817-540-3388 and Dr. Terry Kupers at: 510-654-8333 as they have tried repeatidly to talk with you and have sent you letters that I have copies of. UTMB took Lyme test of my son and UTMB is not even qualified to test for Lyme as only a few labs are such as Igenex in California, but even with UTMB's test results my son is one tenth off a point of being positive of Lyme. Chad's dad has the lesions on every inch of his body, many seizures, mind lesions, etc., which has caused a major medical malpractice suit. My son Chad now has these same bulls eye lesions and I have begged TDC to treat his Lyme condition for over five years and they blame UTMB and UTMB blames TDC. Chad is in segregation and many attornies have written and proven that Chad's tatoos should not have him in seg as this is TDCJ's reason for him being in seg. Dr. Terry has diagnoised him with Shu Syndrome from being segged but still TDCJ refuses to remove him from seg. This again was started by Rockwall County and their corupt games on my family. My sons best friend whom is a black man, Derrick Moore, from Rockwall....went in prison at the same time Chad did and Derrick was stripped naked and put in a concrete box for weeks naked to break his spirit and keep him from telling that Chad was a black persons friend. All the while Rockwall had put Chad in seg so that he would be sent straight into seg at his entry into prison.
