Money from inmate account upon release

Does anyone know if they give federal inmates a check for the money that is in their account the day that they are released and is it possible for them to send a check out, to home?

I understand the procedure has changed since I was released. I got "up to" $200.00 in cash, which turned out to be closer to $150.00, and the remainder was mailed to me at the HWH by check within a week. I have read that they are now given a prepaid visa or MC for their entire account balance as they walk out of the prison.

The best way to find out for sure the policy at that prison is to have him ask someone in his unit team.

They do give you a cheque when you are released with the left over money you have in your account, I am not sure about sending them out.:)

I believe you can request money to be sent out from your account while in custody. Through your counselor, I think.

I didn't know they were placing all money on a prepaid card. Something to tell my LO about...he may not know about this update.

The BOP at most facilities now provide a visa debit card with the balance of inmate account funds deposited to that account. I. believe the maximum for the card is $500, and any balance above that is mailed to you. It's a very handy thing to have a working Visa card walking out the door!

Those prepaid debit cards are great, unless they “forget” to activate it. My LO got one but the pin did not work. Several phone calls later we straightened it out. No way to send someone out the door.

My BOP card worked fine and the max was $500. Agree, very handy to have hitting the door to freedom!

I agree

Do they also "pay" you up until your last day of work? Not that the $.12/hour my husband makes will ever amount to anything - I think last month he made around $13 for the month, but if he's earned it, he should get paid right up until the day he leaves.

He just switched jobs from the kitchen to education, so hopefully he will actually be getting a raise! Hah, not like making $.13/hr will matter anyway. Pride more than anything!

He’s, they will! It’s all part of the release process that they get all accounts closed out before departing. Every little bit counts!

They issue a debit card with their pic on it upon release. Any other funds will be sent to them either debit or via federal check
