Free books for prisoners

FYI - There are several organizations across the U.S. that send free books to prisoners. The prisoner must write in and ask for the types of books they're interested in or the authors they want. (Many times exact titles are not available but these organizations do their best to match the requests as closely as possible.) Be sure to include inmate number.

Most of these orgs have educational materials as well as fiction, non-fiction, self-help, vocational manuals, etc.

These organizations also accept book donations.

FYI - Many of these places send books all over the United States (so they don't need to be in your area necessarily for you or a friend to benefit from their services.)

For example, Books To Prisoners sends books across the country (though they may have some restrictions on California and Texas).

The Buddhist Peace Fellowship Transformative justice section has a list of a lot of places to get free books for prisoners but it may be a little more specific than the others. I would post the link but it wouldn't let me- just type it into google and it should come up.

So just to be on the same page, my hubby needs to write and request the books?

Chynab 02-18-2009 01:51 PM

Is there a way that I may be able to contact them for my baby.

Have you ever thought a book would be great for someone, and given it to them as a gift, and they never even open it up? That's happened to me before, and could be one reason they want the inmate to request from them, rather than well meaning friends and relatives.

Thanks a lot! I will take the contact addresses with me when the time comes and I have to go there!
