What would Inmates Search for on the Internet

If inmates had monitored access to the internet, what will they most likely search for?

Fridyrr.Likn 02-12-2018 04:41 PM

I assume that's going to vary widely since there are so many different types of people in prison. Many would contact family, many would keep up with news or sports or politics. It just depends on the person. This would be like asking what people not in prison search for...millions and millions of different things.

Hello and Welcome to PTO. I moved your post here to this forum because it really wouldn't be seen in the place you had it.

I would think that if an inmate had monitored access to the Internet, if they were smart, they would be looking up items that could help their case. Those are just my thoughts.

nygirl17 02-12-2018 05:04 PM

Pretty much the same things a person who isn't in prison would search for

Chaddersgirl 02-12-2018 06:26 PM

At my guy’s facility the inmates on their way to a HWH or home can search for jobs under the supervision of their counselors.

In all honesty I think most would use it for the wrong reasons and that is why it's not allowed.

Judging from what my pen pal asks me to look up and print out, information about how to start a business.

I'm thinking same. Excluding the astute prudent one's who are needing help on a pro-se self file appeal type of case."

Porn. Copious amounts of pornography. I think they'd see this as a release of sorts but I think it would likely make their stay harder, no pun intended.

Considering my husband is obsessive about having me look and send him news, politics, sports scores, and news, and is starved for it, that is what he would be looking up in addition to business news, huffington post, breitbart (only for his laugh of the day). He's even had me send him the play by play in a bunch of NFL games. Which is the exact same stuff he looks up here anyway. He doesn't use facebook or other social media, he wouldn't be looking up job stuff, he is an information junkie. Can't stand that he only gets to watch the Olympics on one channel until 9pm there. When he called me earlier today and was bitching about it at the end of our conversation, I finally said, well, you're in prison, what do you expect?!

But plenty would be looking up things they shouldn't be, even though the prisons could block any site if they really set their minds to it. It's no different than the schools blocking everything. But I can understand the worry that they can't block everything and something getting through.

He also would be looking up books at the library or at amazon he could order.

Bottom line..information and research. Can't do that. Instead, I've become the source and I have to spend my time looking up people and information for him when he asks. Double duty for me! It's so time consuming at times. It would be nice if certain prisoners had some limited internet while being monitored.

MissStar 02-13-2018 08:17 AM

My husband is a professional personal trainer, guaranteed heís be looking up nutritional information that his books didnít clarify well enough, as well as gift ideas for me haha. Itís just who he is! :)

“The internet is for porn”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Nickel Timer 02-13-2018 10:41 AM

If we're talking about "monitored" access (per the OP) then presumably porn wouldn't be allowed and/or blocked.

All I can say is that, for me, I would have loved to be able to keep up with news and current events.

Even though I had a personal TV for most of my time down this last time, you still miss so much getting only the few biggest headline tidbit stories on the 5 o'clock local news or even cable news like CNN, compared to what's available (and in depth) on online news sites. Even though I had access to the daily local newspaper and a few monthly magazine subscriptions, there's still quite a bit of news you miss out on being locked up.

So yeah, if they were to introduce filtered Internet access on those JPay tablets or whatever, I think many prisoners would be catching up on the news.

xolady 02-13-2018 10:54 AM

I know my husband would ask me to look up all kinds of stuff about football. I just see where inmates even with limited access could use it for illegal purposes. Even if they aren't looking up the point spread on miami v buffalo for gambling purposes. Just to many variables when your talking about a prisoner.

Kirin 02-13-2018 10:57 AM

I can tell that my boo would google a lot of 1. Geeky stuff like Magic - the Gathering rules and strategies or screenshots from new videogames and 2. Food related stuff because he turned into a vegan, gluten free, spiritual hipster-foodie.

AndyS 02-13-2018 11:03 AM

I may be wrong but from his past posts I’m thinking the OP is trying to get some sort of idea of what legal things inmates would want if they had access to the internet. Perhaps to start up a business.

Ohh I think youíre right, I remember that post.

Also, I missed the word ďmonitoredĒ in the original post. Oops.

someguyfrommars 02-16-2018 05:14 PM

probably same thing that people in society search porn, news, sports, movies, etc

char_hart80 02-17-2018 10:26 AM

From my understanding, they can't search much of anything on online, well not to my knowledge O_o I guess it all depends on the prison there in, security level they are at and policies set in place within the prison system there currently in. I know my BF right now doesn't even have access to Jpay, only phones and his books, though he's in an Adult detention center waiting to be sent to a prison.
