Question about PTO Rules

I have been a member of PTO for... ummm... A whole lot of years now (lol!) and I would like to ask a question about the rules if I may.

I am working on my second novel (my first is being published in late January) which is about my experiences as a prison wife. But I feel my views may be limited to my own experiences and I would like to represent a broad spectrum of family life with a loved one serving time.

I would like to know if I need specific permission from PTO to post occassionally asking our family of users about things like "The funniest experience in prison", "How to get along with guards", "How to tell your incarcerated loved one _______" and so on, fully sharing with the users that I am writing a book and am looking for original short stories for the book. I will not ask for any personal information, only ask for a Nick Name by which to reference each story, and also ask for editorial rights on the short stories they share.

If it's not ok, I totally understand and will cooperate with PTO completely. I love this community and wouldn't want to compromise my account.

Thanks for your time!

ClassyCrazy.

Im not sure about the rules as such, but I assume that what I put on here is only for PTO people to read.
However, If a thread was quite clear that it was intended as contributions for a book, and perhaps followed up with a PM from you to each person to confirm it was understood and OK to be used, then I think that would be OK with me.
Just my thoughts.
Good luck with your book, there is certainly a need out here :-)

Your idea makes sense :) but keep in mind...everything you put on here ANYONE can read, whether a member of PTO or not. It's all available on the Internet for the world to read and we also have people reading as "guests" :)

For the OP....I'd be happy to add my thoughts, experiences to your book. If you ever want to PM me some questions or whatever, I'd be glad to participate :)

Yes, I realise that anything on the internet only has an illusion of privacy, but thats not the same as being taken and published in a book. I think that it would be polite and respectful to make sure that the person is OK with contributing.
I'd be happy to participate knowing that was the intention, but uncomfortable with it being assumed.

We do have a "Media Disclaimer" that is generally posted after requests for info for books, student papers, research etc. I'll post it here so you'll know what it says. Don't take it personal if its posted after every request for info you post, its not personal its policy that we do so:

Advisory for PTO Members Regarding Requests from Journalists & Members of the Media, and Students/Researchers:

PTO welcomes journalists and/or members of the media to learn and educate themselves about prisons, prisoners, and their loved ones, as well as students and researchers doing research on these subjects.

We will, occasionally, allow the media or students/researchers to request information and personal stories from our members. However, PTO does not endorse any journalist, member of the media, story/report, media outlet, student/researcher, or educational/research institution.

If you decide to communicate with a media representative or a researcher, then you assume all of the risks involved. PTO is in no way liable for the outcome of the story/report/paper. Communication with members of the media and students/researchers is completely voluntarily and PTO holds no responsibility for the consequences of that communication.

PTO does not screen or authenticate any person(s) claiming to be from the media or from an educational/research institution, nor does PTO authenticate their motivations for obtaining the information.

As always, the disclosure of personal information (either yours or someone that is incarcerated) may have some serious repercussions. PTO has no way of predicting how the media or any researcher will present your story or that of your loved one. Any relationship with the media or any researchers is to be entered into at your own risk.

If you receive an unsolicited email or private message from a person claiming to be from the media or researching information for an educational or research institution, report it to the PTO Administration immediately.

We also ask that yoiu give credit where credit is due and any info gleaned from PTO is cited as such:

Any information obtained from this site must be credited to Prisontalk.com and its members. Failure to follow these rules and policies will result in the request being immediately removed from the site and permanent banning of the media member(s) or students/researchers involved. (FOUND HERE)

In your posts seeking info, you must advise members that the informatin is for that prupose.

Happy writing....and good luck with your book!
