Blackwater Prison
:blah:Milton prison may get new life in budget talks

Budget talks eye Blackwater facility

TALLAHASSEE The Senate scored a victory early Saturday morning when the House agreed to open Blackwater River Correctional Institution in Milton, a $120 million, state-of-the-art private prison that has stood vacant for lack of prisoners.
The agreement came as House and Senate lawmakers worked on final details of the state's $69 billion budget that must be passed before the session ends Friday.Under the proposal, the Department of Corrections would shift prisoners from existing dormitories to fill Blackwater's 2,224 beds, 224 more than the facility originally was designed to hold.
The architect for the private operator, Geo, warned that the expansion would violate federal standards that mandate a minimum of 25 square feet of "unencumbered space," per inmate and risks a lawsuit at the proposed capacity.
But Senate budget chief JD Alexander, a Lake Wales Republican, said Saturday he was confident the expansion could be done.
"I couldn't in all conscience sit there with a brand-new, $120 million facility and not find a way to use it. It just doesn't make sense to me," Alexander said.
Alexander said the agreement will give the Department of Corrections enough flexibility to eliminate vacant positions and avoid significant job losses.
But the Florida Police Benevolent Association, which lobbied hard to keep Blackwater closed, said the move will cause serious disruptions.
If a dorm closes in North Florida, and the only jobs available are in South Florida, veteran corrections officers will resign instead of relocating, said PBA lobbyist Ken Kopczynski.
"The bottom line is, it's a prison that's not needed," he said. "They could have just waited to do this."

I don't get that.. isn't Milton in North Fl? If they close dorms in North Fl due to the opening of Blackwater (in North Fl), how do they figure the jobs will be in South Fl? Or am I an air-head and not understanding what is meant by that statement...

Take a look at these also:

if you read a little further in that article, they also have plans to overcrowd this prison by 217 inmates!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to start sending emails. the Mcnaily (sp) guy seems to be hiding in the bushes for some reason.

$110 million has or will be given to GEO. Jerry Couy on SantaRosa???said gave to. WTF?????

Milton is in Northwest Florida, in the panhandle. About 20 miles east of Pensacola. Nothing the DOC does makes sense. Oh, it's Walter McNeil who is in charge of the FLDOC.

And it seems to me if they are closing dorms they shouldn't have an overage in Blackwater. I read that and it made no sense. What the heck is wrong with these people? They wouldn't last a day in the real world!

I sent email to the Gov. This morn I will send some more to anyone I can think of.

I was reading Arizona news, They are also debating getting private prisons, no names mentioned yet.

???? I thought GEO build blackwater. read last paragraph of this article.

wifeofMichael 04-26-2010 03:47 PM

The state paid GEO to build it. Sounds totally insane doesn't it?

amickeyfan 04-26-2010 04:02 PM

like you said, seems what DOC does, doesn't make sense to those out in the real business world....

insert scream here ( ) you would not believe what it took to find this information. All the time they were saying Noooo, we are not going to open that prison, they were in the process of giving GEO a ton of money and will continue to do so.

this is creepy
