Policy dictates that if an inmate poses a risk to himself, other inmates or staff they can remain in special housing unit indefinitely.

I do not know AL policy, but in general I have never seen a law that prevents the DOC from keeping an inmate in solitary.

With that being said...studies show that inmates should not spend considerable time in solitary. In my prison those locked up in SHU we try to have them housed with another inmate.
