QUESTIONS AND INFO (ONLY) Ishi Conservation Camp #18

I'm finding so little information about the rules and regulations of firecamps!! I can locate them online, however I am not finding the information I need to have a uneventful visit. My loved one is being transferred to ISHI camp CC #18 in Paynes Creek, CA/Tehema County next week. Can anyone help me locate the rules and regulations of this camp or should I just be calling the DOC?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

Rooferslady I live in Tehama County. I don't know anything about this fire camp, but I can give you a couple of phone numbers you can call. This phone number is for the Fire Department Unit Headquarters business office in Tehama County - (530)529-8548. I also found a phone number for a Conservation Camp in Tehama County located in Paskanta. It is (530) 833-5562. I got these phone numbers from my local phone book. I hope they help you out.

My boyfriend just got transferred to Ishi firecamp. Your man should be able to give you information on this camp. My boyfriend was at Sugar Pine firecamp before and he gave me the number to that camp. Call them up and I am sure that they will be able to give you information on Ishi or tell you where you can get information. Sugar Pine is (530) 472-3027 or (530) 472-3028. I hope this is helpful.

It is best to just call and find out the regulations. Every camp can be some what a little diffrent.

take care

Just for the info - and because I'm amazed that they would name a facility for him - does anyone know who Ishi was? He was the last of his tribe, lived alone in the mountains for years after the others died off. finally came in, and was taken care of, but lived the last of his years in the Smithsonian Institution, showing them his techniques for hunting, etc., and recording his language.

thought y'all should know

All Fire Camps are a little different.

Call the Camp, that way you'll get first hand information.

Just for the hell of it, find out for yourself who Ishi was - his story is absolutely fascinating.
(It is not about the camp at all, but that there is a camp named for him is . . . well, droll.)

JMWifey 09-21-2006 12:32 PM

PT Rose got it :) I know that Camp Ishi is on the way to Susanville in Paynes Creek, I always pass it & I'm trying to get a glance of it! :) But if you normally drive to CCC to see your husband, now you won't have to go through all the windy roads :)

LeBeau 09-21-2006 05:05 PM

Moving this to a more widely viewed forum... Finally dawned on me that the "Not Susanville" crowd might know something about this!

Thanks my husband has been calling me like 3 times a day and he is blowing up my phone bill!!!!!!!!!!! But anyways he says that he really likes it there so far because it is really laid back but he says that his "crew" is out fighting a fire and he got there after they left so he didn't get to go and he is kind of bumed because he has been so excited at the fact of getting out there and maybe saving someone's life!!!!!!! So thanks for the info you guys have given me!! I also wanted to ask if anyone has had a family visit there or has heard anything about how they are there:confused:

PT ROSE 09-23-2006 08:53 AM

Don't worry, He'll get his turn!! :D I talked to my Son Thursday and all the camps in the area are out on fires....His crew is the only one there.
If you don't get a call, you will know where he is.

Sanchez06 09-28-2006 09:26 PM

Hey well my husband wants me to go visit and I was just wondering if anyone knows of an airport that is close to there? I am planning on going up for a family visit and I don't want to drive up there alone so if anyone has any info PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!! THANKS in advance!!!!!

Sanchez06 09-28-2006 09:50 PM

OH yeah if anyone knows of any hotels to stay at around there to that would be great information. THANKS!!!:D

JMWifey 09-28-2006 11:33 PM

Red Bluff is the closest place to Paynes Creek. Have you been on HWY 36 to Susanville? It's right on 36 :)

Sanchez06 10-02-2006 08:16 PM

Does anyone know what kind of food is allowed for both regular visits and at family visits?

PT ROSE 10-02-2006 09:06 PM

I'd call and ask, when I went to my first visit I called, they told me everything I could bring and couldn't bring, what I could wear, etc. He even gave me directions how to get there. where to park, everything..
All the guys were standing there hollering and waving at me when I drove up!! :D
The visiting is Great at Fire Camp!

Sanchez06 10-06-2006 10:31 AM

Thanks PT Rose!!!!!! Do you have the number where I can call? Also can I wear blue jeans since they are in orange?

PT ROSE 10-06-2006 10:57 AM

This is the only phone number I found.
530-597-2846

I couldn't wear blue jeans, or any blue for that matter.
All the camps are different, that's why it's better to call and ask. :)

I went to Ishi camp last weekend to visit my fiance and it was wonderful. the visits were relaxed and the place was beautiful. make sure you get food in town before you head over there they wont let you leave and com eback back!

MikesSis 12-14-2006 11:48 AM

My brother is a fire camp too, and i have found the best way to get information is to just call the camp.

Maybe the PTO staff could think about making a Firecamp Sticky and we could post our experiences at different camps.

Confused on what's ok to bring- visiting a fire camp?

hello! first of all i love this site. it has been so helpful. My fiance is in Ishi Camp #18 and I dont know what to bring when I go see him. I read we can bring ice chests for sodas? but what about chips or something that doesnt need to be kept cold? can i just bring it in the plastic/paper bags that i get it in from the grocery store? what do ya'll usually bring in? thanks sooo much and all the firefighters on the fires are in my prayers. its been 2 weeks since i talked to my fiance and its killing me!!
