The French actress Béatrice Dalle has married a convicted prisoner she met after becoming a voluntary visitor to his jail.

A town hall official conducted the wedding in the waiting room of the Hermitage prison in Brest, Dalle's home town in Brittany. Under jail rules, soft drinks and biscuits would have been available afterwards.

The groom's identity, and details of his crime, were not disclosed.

Dalle, 40, who has shown a capacity to shock since appearing in explicit nude scenes in her first film, Betty Blue, in 1986, was familiar with the French criminal justice system before starting to make charity visits to prisoners.

In 1992, she was given a six-month suspended sentence for shoplifting after stealing jewellery in the Marais district of Paris.

A search of her flat uncovered more than 30 bracelets, rings and necklaces. Four years later she was fined for drug offences.

Dalle has also been involved in the international campaign to clear the name of Leonard Peltier, who is serving life imprisonment in America for the murder of two FBI agents during a siege at an Indian reservation in South Dakota in 1975. Dalle was previously married to a French painter, Jean-Francois Dalle.

After they divorced, she had a relationship with the French rap artist, Joey Starr.

Uh, I'm still hung up on the "voluntary visitor to jail." The involuntary visitors would be the inmates I guess...
Congrats to them! and many happy forevers.

LOL :D Actually what they mean is that in France, people can volunteer to go visit prisoners without knowing them. You just register in a prison, and the administration will put you on a list of 1 or several prisoners who have no family or friends, and you will go visit them whenever you want. :)

Wow that is a really nice thing to do, to bad they don't have something like that here. People could volunteer to go see inmates who don't get visits.

And how long do you think she would have been in prison if she had done
the same offences in the USA?

titantoo, after more than 2 years on PTO, I noticed the sentences in France are not as tough as in the US. Sometimes I'm really shocked by what I read on PTO !! :(

Not to mention- in the US, as an "ex-offender," she probably never would have been allowed to be a voluntary visit person! thereby depriving the inmates of the people who can most help them...aaaargh...I wanna rescind the revolution, keep the constitution, and join the european union, dang it.

We know of her over here too and good for her :) . I think we have the same thing in UK whereby someone can visit inmates who don't have visitors/family etc - I had a friend who was going to do it and visit at a prison local to us in England.

Betty Blue actress weds prisoner

French actress Beatrice Dalle, who shot to fame in cult 1986 movie Betty Blue, has married an inmate in a ceremony held in a Brittany prison.

Dalle, 40, wed the unidentified man on Monday at the Hermitage prison in Brest, local officials said.

The actress has struggled to match the success she enjoyed in Betty Blue, in which she played an unpredictable woman who descended into insanity.

She was previously married to French rap artist Joey Starr.

Dalle - whose real name is Beatrice Cabarrou - has been no stranger to the other side of the law.

She was arrested in 1991 in Paris for stealing jewels in a boutique and stuffing them down her thigh-length boots.

And a 1996 conviction for cocaine and heroin possession in France was removed from the records so she could continue to work in the US. In 1999, she was arrested in Miami for cocaine and heroin possession and was fined for assaulting a Paris traffic warden in 2000.
