Has your loved one been able to participate in an Anger Management Class? Mine has not and the one thing that worries me is he is so accustomed to resolving conficts with his fists, he is doing a long sentence and may not get out and I do hold out hope, but he needs to learn to turn the other cheek and walk away from confrontations. Does anyone else think about this, if he gets out he would end right back there if he doesn't learn how to control his temper. He is real big on that pride and feeling he is being disprespected macho stuff and ends up in fights. Is this just cause he is in there and how its in prison, or will he know how to handle things out here without resorting to hitting someone???

Many of the inmates that I worked with in prison have an anger management problem. Most of them are very impulsive. A lot of people would benefit from Anger Management classes but the bottom line is that the class will only provide information. It is up to the inmate to use the information. It is very difficult to change a behavior. The thing is prison is that inamtes have to sometimes project a personality in order to stay safe. It takes awhile for an inmate to get established. What people on the outside would consider stupid and turn the other cheek is not always possible in prison. There is a huge adjustment for people returning to the world and many do end up right back in prison because there isn't a lot of services or preparation for inmates returning to society and when they have spent years developing a certain personality in prison that personality doesn't always work well in the world. Send him some information on anger management if you want but ultimately it is up to him to use it and incorporate it into his personality. Good luck!

Joey is attending Anger Management, and he really loves it. So far he always has nothing but positive things to tell me about it, and he seems to be very active in his group.

The problem is that due to budget cuts in Florida, the Anger Management teachers don't stay long, at least it's the case in FSP. The teachers come and go and thus it's impossible to work in the long run, so I wonder if those classes, in Florida, are very beneficial to the inmates.

The problem with the prison system is that most of them wait to give Anger Management classes toward the end of their incarceration instead of the beginning and give them time to "work" on it.

My husband enjoyed the classes and has actually taken them twice. He learned a lot about himself and even though he had taught himself anger management long before he got into a class, he did learn a lot.

But the first steps in anger management is realizing that you need it and that you can't resolve lifes issues with your fists. Just keep encouraging him!

good luck!

wouldn't it be great if they gave Anger Management in reception...while new inmates were still in shock...might be able to make a difference in how a lot of things go from there on in. and everyone in there would have those skills for dealing with whatever happened...It makes me sad that even when they try to do good things, it ends up all skewed.

My husband was in anger management, but the teacher dropped him because he got mad- I swear. She told him to act like she was me and she started giving him a hard time and he got very upset and told her she didn't know me, etc., etc. I think he scared her because she just sent him a note and told him he was out. Very dumb- he obviously needs it!

My guy took a class right before he got out and now that he is home he takes one class per week as part of his parole conditions. All in all I'd say it has helped him and will continue to do so.

Haswtch,
I think that anger management in reception is a great idea! Maybe someone in the prison system will eventually think of it and push for it to happen. That would be great! Or maybe they might even read your post and it will catch.
