SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Supreme Court on
Thursday:

Declared unconstitutional a portion of a law
requiring a 15-year extension on prison terms for
people using a gun during an armed robbery.

Ordered a new trial for Edward Tenney, convicted of
the 1993 murder of a 74-year-old Aurora woman, so a
jury may hear statements alleging another man
confessed to the killing.

Granted Milton Johnson's request for DNA testing on
evidence from an Emden woman who survived an attack,
in which her boyfriend was killed — along Interstate
55 south of Chicago in 1983.

Rejected two claims that extended prison sentences
were unconstitutional under a recent U.S. Supreme
Court ruling. Eugene Hill was rightly sentenced to 50
years in prison for a 1982 attempted murder and rape
and Kizzy Jackson's 10-year sentence for aggravated
battery was proper, the court said.

Rejected former Chicago police Lt. William Devoney's
claim for pension benefits because he was convicted of
mail fraud.
