Investigation launched into inmate's death
January 04 2005 at 05:22PM
Correctional services' authorities and police were conducting preliminary investigations into the death of a Helderstroom prisoner, after an alleged beating by wardens breaking up a fight at the Caledon prison.
Western Cape correctional services spokesperson, Eddie Johnson, said on Tuesday that Shaun Cupido, 26, died as a result of undisclosed injuries sustained during the fracas.
Johnson said Cupido was one of six prisoners in the medium B section of the prison who apparently attacked two prison warders over the weekend.
"Other officials intervened to break up the attack and in the process six prisoners were injured. They were taken to the prison hospital and one of the more seriously injured was taken to Caledon hospital," said Johnson.
'Other officials intervened to break up the attack'The two warders sustained stab wounds to the head, back and arms.
Johnson said all other personnel involved in the incident remained on active duty, except the two injured wardens.
He said besides an internal correctional services investigation, the police were also investigating a murder charge.
Meanwhile, the senior physician attached to Caledon hospital in charge of conducting post mortems, refused to be drawn on the nature of the injuries sustained, saying the matter was sub judice.
Dr Selby Frank only confirmed that Cupido died on Monday as a result of the injuries.
