I'm hoping somebody can help me!!!!! I need to find out exactly how to get to Centinela State Prison. I tried to find it on mapquest but it doesn't show me how to get there. I'm coming from the Southbay area. also if anyone has any information on visiting. How long is an inmate in classification? Do you get contact visits immediately after they get there? Is it difficult to get family visits? Do the inmates get to use the phone regularly? Does anyone carpool regularly? please help if you can answer any question

You did not say where you were coming from, however, Centinela is a drive from Los Angeles. You can either come via the coast or the inland routes. I would recommend taking the 10 Freeway toward Riverside/San Bernardino/ Palm Springs. Thats about 90 minutes from Down- town LA. Stay on the 10 through Palm Springs and the Indio area. When you get to Central Indio area the Freeway will split, 10 Fwy to Blythe and 86 Fwy to Brawley. Take the 86 on the west side of the Salton Sea. (There are two Indian Casinos where the Fwy splits) From this point you are about 1 3\4 hours from Centinela. Take the 86 all the way around the Salton Sea to the City of Westmorland. At the one and only stop sign, turn right. I think this is Main Street, but it turns into the name of Forester Road after a couple miles. You stay on Forester for about 25 miles. Again, at the first stop sign (with a blinking red light) turn right on Even-Hughes Highway. You will stay on Even-Hughes for about 15 miles, going past 3 stop signs. At the 4th stop sign is Brown Road, which is the access road to the Prison. Normally on weekends you will see visitors prior to 8:00 am parked in order on the right side of the road. The Prison is about 1 1/2 miles up on Brown Road.

Note: the desert is hot in the summer, so take plenty of water for your trip, which should take about 3 3/4 hours. Also, if you want to go to town once you get to the desert area, instead of turning right on Even-Hughes, turn left. Down town El Centro is about 5 miles up the road, where there are plenty of restaurants and hotels. Good luck and hope this helps. About the only quicker way is to fly into Imperial, but this is to expensive.

If you would like additional infrormation on Centinela or other State Prisons, simply put the name of the prison in the Search engine and all the most reent discussion items on the prison will come up for your review. As a note, Facility B and C have modified programs for the Christmas Weekend, and you should call the local Visitor information center before you come to visit. Oh, and yes inmates have acces to telephones as provided by their work/privelege status and in respect to any modfied program that may be existing on the specific yard.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Hey... Okay my directions...10 east until you hit the 86 Brawley/El Centro. Take the 86 until you come into Westmoreland. The first stop sign that Johnny Angel was talking about is Junction 30. Turn right onto junction 30 and keep going. Then like johnny said, evan hughes hwy is about 20 miles at a stop sign. Turn right and you have about 10 more miles. Good Luck. If you get there before 0800 and there are cars outside park behind one until the escort comes and get you all. Don't wear anything tight revealing or see thru. Black seems to be the safe color until you get the groove of the place. Take extra clothes just in case. NO WHITE PLAIN SHIRTS. Have a good visit.

If You're In The Southbay Meaning Torrance/san Pedro Or Any Around That Area.when I Did Drive Out There For Me The Easiest Was To Take The 405 South Then You'll Drive About On Hour Or So Till You See The 8 Freeway You'll Take It To El Centro (going To Your Left) And The Drive From There Might Be A 2 Hour Drive At The Most Yes Get Off On Dunaway And Go Left Then A Right On Evan Hughes.pretty Simple Route If Traffic Isnt Bad. Good Luck!

taking johnnyangelo's directions are good. taking the 10 to the 86 is better than taking the 8 because the 8, you have to go through the mountains and on the 86 you get a better view and the drive doesnt seem that bad.:thumbsup:
