View Full Version : Sending money from UK to USA
Francesca 12-17-2004, 01:22 AM Hi
I'd like to put some money on Dre's books for Xmas ( as a one off gift) but I'll be honest I have no idea how to do it, and as he's in Federal - the 'new' Federal lockbox doesn't accept personal cheques.....
Can anyone help me ?
(I did read Dash!'s post and Phil's reply but it applied to Holland and France - and though I may get desperate enough to jump on Eurostar and try and make a payment from Paris - I'm not quite there yet  )
Can anyone help ?
Thanks
Francesca
Rostonhall 12-17-2004, 01:59 AM The easiest way is by Western Union, as long as the prison has an account with them. I send money over to Tony this way and it's by far the best method. If you can find out whether they have a W.U. account (a quick phone call to the prison should help) then I'll PM you with all the details. There's a free phone number I use and it's all done in minutes either using a debit or credit card. The debit card charges are less so I always use that. I think it costs around £10 but the money is always in Tony's account within 48 hours, and that includes last Christmas when I transferred a little extra to him at 7pm on Christmas Eve.

2nice 12-17-2004, 03:35 AM As mentioned, you can do it by Western Union. You can do it online. Its an expensive way to do it though. If in the future you want to send money to Dre, maybe you could send the cash to his family and they get the money order and send to him. thats the way i send Jerry money (one the odd occassions that i do). I am presuming that you know one of his relatives! ;) If you dont, W.U. is the only option really, because international bankers cheques are even more expensive... £25 per cheque!!
sharonno1 12-17-2004, 04:28 AM hi francesca i send my to sq the only way is to send a money order u can go to any building society but it takes 3 days to do it comes in a form of a check and they charge u for doing it from 5.00 to 15.00 all depend on which one u use i find thats the safest way to do it i have had no problem in the last 4 yrs doing this good luck
Rostonhall 12-17-2004, 06:25 AM Every state varies, and I assume the Federal rules are different again. In Illinois the ONLY means of getting money to an inmate is by US Money Orders in denominations of $50, no more, or by Western Union. US Money Orders, as I've said in a previous thread, are virtually impossible to get outside of the US, unless you belong to one of the groups that befriends Death Row inmates course. No cheque in any shape or form will be accepted in some states.
I suppose £10 is quite a lot to pay for sending the money by Western Union but I find it's the quickest and safest way of doing it and doesn't involve other people, who invariably get it wrong and it also means no cash is actually sent through the post, and therefore no risk of it being stolen.

Francesca 12-17-2004, 10:12 AM Thanks guys :waves:
I've just rung Leavenworth to see if they have a Western Union account - the guy there was a little thrown to get an international call I think :) along the lines of " you're English ? #sounding suprised#, let me just put this on speakerphone" - I have a feeling I just spoke 'at' a whole room full of people:rolleyes:
The upshot of it is yes they have a western union account but he doesn't know where I should send the stuff - if I have to Federal Lockbox it or can send it direct to Leavenworth - so he asked me to call back in two hours when 'inmate accounts' will be in ( aparently it was 11.30 their time and they'd gone for lunch ) - so one more international call later and I may be able to get something to Dre for Christmas ( and it may have been cheeper to jump on Eurostar :p ) - I was almost tempted to say " oh while I'm on the phone can I just speak to Dre ? " - but I dont think it would have gone down well:cool:
Aislinn 12-17-2004, 04:42 PM Rose put me onto Western Union a while back, its simple to use and there have never been any problems :)
Helen 01-09-2005, 08:25 AM I know this is too late for Christmas now, but I've only just found the thread. Have you tried Payko.com? It's not as quick as Western Union, but a lot cheaper. It only takesa few days. I can't remember how much but it is worth investigating. I've also discovered that a few States accept $US travellers cheques, but you'd have to check with the prison first.
Helen.
richie'sgirl 01-09-2005, 10:44 AM If you have an American Express shop near you, they do international money orders,it cost's £5 processing fee,but there is no waiting, they do them in a couple of minutes while you wait.
If anyone need's US money order's next month,I am going to PA to spend Valentine's day with Richie,so please, just send me a pm if you need some and we'll sort it out.

Bixbyshaza 01-09-2005, 10:55 AM my head is in a spin i also need to send money to my penpal i am in uk and he is in jackson ga
i have no clue how to go about this could some 1 help me please
Thankyou
Starchild 01-09-2005, 12:29 PM Bixbyshaza, all the suggestions mentioned here are the usual ways to send money. Best to check with your pal as each facility/state has a different way of doing it. Maybe going to the forum of the state where he's at will give you the answers. If you're getting a banker's draft drawn up then you may need a deposit slip like I have to use for Florida. Some places allow you to mail the cheque direct to the prison and others have specific addresses to mail it to. It's pretty straight forward, just depends which method you use to get the money out there and how the prison in question allows money to be received. Any probs just pm me; I have dealt with sending money to several states.
