View Full Version : Question about Death row
Maggie_Luis 12-14-2004, 03:39 PM I admire all of you who have someone on death row. I respect all of you. It may sound like a stupid question but are they in cells all day long or do they get to go the yard, comissary, are visits behind a glass?. I dont believe in deathrow, I dont think no one should play god. My two cents. ...Are the CO's nasty to them more so then the ones in gen pop?
happy holidays and I wishing all of you the best..
Love
maggie
IceBlueSparkle 12-14-2004, 04:20 PM Keep in mind that the answers to these questions vary from state to state :) I can tell you what it's like in California...
>are they in cells all day long or do they get to go the yard
Yup all day long....they get three 5 minute showers a week (Although my sweetie tells me he bathes every day. They have big plastic buckets in their cells and he uses it to give himself a shower using the toilet as the drain *laughs* He said after 20 years he can do it without spilling even a drop of water on the floor). And are supposed to have the option of going to the yard every day for three hours....however there is usually a reason to keep them on lockdown so it ends up being 3 or 4 days out of the week.
The rest of the time he remains in his single cell...it's 4.5 X 6 feet in size. It has a bunk, toilet and sink.
Everytime they want to leave their cell they are shackled and strip searched...and are accompanied by 2 guards.
>comissary
Yes he can buy stuff from the commissary....he hasn't mentioned any sort of restriction so I imagine it's the same as mainline.
He has a tv and radio/cd player. He's allowed to have up to 12 cd's in his possession at all times. They are allowed books, soft cover only. He said that they also have access to the prison library...they receive lists of books available and can order them that way.
>are visits behind a glass?
No...they are allowed contact visits in California *thank God* They used to have a visiting room but someone got stupid and attacked someone else and they closed it down. Now visits are in "cages"...you enter the cage and wait for them to be brought in. After they are uncuffed...you are allowed to hug and kiss...and then you can hold hands during the visit. And again before he leaves same deal...a hug and a kiss.
>are the CO's nasty to them more so then the ones in gen pop?
*lol* I imagine the CO's are the same on deathrow as they are in general population. I don't think there is a difference. He's never complained about CO's but if there are issues it's not something he could tell me on the phone or in a letter.
Best wishes :)
CelliePieGrrl 12-14-2004, 07:48 PM Hi Maggie. Just curious...on why you are asking this? Just asking...
Anyway, in Texas, they are locked up in their cells about 23 hours out of the day. I think there is about an hour of scheduled rec time each day, they rotate "inside" (in a rec room) and "outside" days (in a closed rec area), plus shower time every day and that's it.
They can have commissary, yes...
And yes visits are behind glass, on a telephone...doesn't matter if you are their wife, mother, whatever, it's all behind glass. :(
Two words...Texas sucks.
richie'sgirl 01-23-2005, 10:30 AM There are 3 death row's in PA,I only know about Graterford.
Inmates are in their cell's approx 22 hours a day.
They have a bunk, toilet, sink, table and if they have enough money,a foot locker.
They can have 3 shower's a week, but if they have a visit, they will often let them have an extra shower beforehand.
Guy's go outside for rec, where they can either be alone in something like a dog run,but they can speak to guy's either side etc,or that can play handball on the court if they book it.
Law library is once a week for 2 hour's,but again has to be booked in advance and you have to go in pair's.
Commissary is the same as general population, except cigarettes, death row aren't allowed to smoke.
They can buy a T.V and radio, cable is an extra $20 a month if they want it.
Visit's are one 3 hour visit for each Sunday in the month.
All non contact,through glass.
The new visit room,or rather, revamped old one will be open next month,so I'll tell all when I get back from my visit.
We can send in books and magazines from approved vendor's or direct from publisher's.
Inmates can buy trainers(sneakers),boots, watches etc from outside vendor's,but only with prior approval and only one purchase every ninety day's.
They can make 3 fifteen minute phone call's per week,on allotted day's,either collect or prepaid.
Call's to lawyer's are taken out of this allowance.
RegisSweetness 01-28-2005, 10:23 PM my baby says he goes to the yard for a lil while every day. other than that theyre in their cells 23 hours a day. they do get showers, but i forget how many a week. my baby calls every other day. the phones get rolled to the front of thier cells. we get 2 visits a week, 2 hours each, they are contact visits in a small cage. everytime theyre outside of their cage or cell they have to be escorted where they go handcuffed by guards. its very humiliating to them, and its sad to see. the guards are always gonna be rude most of the time but believe it or not, out here the death row inmates get more respect from the guards than mainline inmates do. i dont know why...they just do.
Kong Girl 01-31-2005, 09:58 AM Chiming in from Florida State Prison. The guys are in their "rooms" pretty much 24/7, except the few lucky ones that have visitors every week (or at all). They are offered 2 rec times a week and usually 2 quicky showers. They can wash up and do laundry in their cells. Sensory deprivation is the opperative phrase. The cells are about the color of silly putty, though we've heard they are in the process of painting, I forgot to ask what color. And no view. At least they don't look directly into someone else's cell, yuck!
Visits are contact and in a large room with the other groups of visitors (not just DR). They are cracking down on the amount of contact. No comments from the peanut gallery...but we are now allowed to have poloroids taken. Which is nice.
CO's are what they are. Not all are bad, just like the guys. Most if treated with respect...some are different in public then back on the row. We will never know the full story as we get to go home and sleep in our own beds at night. Even if it is without our guys. And they won't let us have a sleep over there!
rlewis729 04-06-2005, 12:40 PM My man's on death row at San Quentin, but he's in North Segregation, which I guess is sort of like the honors program. They're let out of their cells every morning at 7:30 a.m., and allowed to mingle, go up to the yard, shower, use the phone, etc. Then they're locked back in their cells at 1:30 p.m. So, 6 hours out, 18 in for them each day.
The rest is like IceBlueSparkle said.
Just Me 1973 04-06-2005, 03:20 PM In Ohio they go to rec one and a half hour, they visit through glass, they can buy stuff from commissary, they are allowed TVs and CD players, they can use the phone when they are on rec inside and that pretty much sums it up I think.
poetery 04-07-2005, 03:59 AM 24/7 lock down
Just twice a week 90 minutes in a concrete yard by themselves
3 showers per week
commissary comes to their cells
the cells have NO window and they have no permission to work and no allowance for art works
My friend makes drawings with M&Ms and pencil and pen on file covers
Visitation just behind glass :-(
Arizona has the most restrictive rules in the US.
CO's are as normal people are - some are nice others are black sheep - as everywhere else. I met some very ncie officers there.
Why do you want to know that all?
someonespecial 04-18-2005, 01:55 PM My Baby in Florida is locked up 24 hours a day except for 2 days a week out for yard...and shower.
liberaldog 12-14-2005, 01:30 PM In Georgia they are out 6-9am, then 6-9pm or 12-3. It rotates. They have yard I think 5 days a week, so they have a lot of out of cell time. They can order from the commissary, I think they are allowed what all inmates are allowed. They can make phone calls during any of their out times, and can shower everyday during their out times as well. Visits are contact, but no holding hands during it, only a hug and a kiss coming and going. Visits are 6 hours long every Saturday and Sunday. No tvs, but they have tvs outside of their cells. He says you have to look through two sets of bars and a fence to see it, and its 19" and its 12 feet away. They cant have CDs. I think Georgias one of the better DR out there, they seem to have more rights than say those in CA or TX.
