I am confused about the way DOC gives ID numbers. Is it the year at the time of sentencing or the year they initially were incarcerated? For example if the year is 2000, is that supposed to be when their sentence began? Could they have been incarcerated in a county jail before this and the time there be included in the sentence?

So is it the year of the crime or the year they hit state, he tells me the year he went upstate, but could he have served 3 years "under the belt", that long...

You know what, now that I think of it, I believe it is the year they are transferred to the state.
Thanks much.

yes it is the year the went upstate. My hubby was arrested in 2003, but got upstate in 2004 so his # begins with 04. And the letter corresponds to the reception center they went to, and the last 4 #s is the # they were in that year. ie: if you were the very first person to be processed in 2004, your # would be 04 A(or b) 0001. At least that is what hubby told me.

the specific way they give an id number is as follows the first two numbers are the year you go to the reception center. My inmate id number was 82 B 1618 so i arrived at reception in 1982 (although I was incarcerated for almost two years by this time) the letter designates the reception center you were processed at A means Sing Sing or Downstate B is for Elmira C is for Attica and D is for Clinton Correctional. Lastly the final four digits denote the number prisoner admitted in that year. If by chance an inmate has a T that means he went through a facility that has exceeded that last four digits meaning 9999 is the highest they go so he would be say 82T0001. Hope that clarifys it. (I do believe that the women are issued a G but i am not positive on that one only know about the men.

Thanks so much, that does clarify it for me. My man kept telling me that, but it didn't make sense to me.
