Can anyone tell me if Death Row inmates get visitation or can you only send mail to them.
Has anyone visited Florida State Death Row and if so what is it like? I have never been inside anything other then the county jail while my cousin was there. It scared me then.
Thanks in advance :):)

Hi GotMilk
Death row Florida inmates are lucky enough to be able to have contact visits. You need to get a visitation form from the inmate you are visiting, and get a background check done, before you are approved. I believe if you are coming interstate, you can have 2 special 6 hour visits.
I have never visited DR Florida, but I am sure someone will come along and tell you more. I know its a visitation park, where you can take in money, buy snacks for your friend and yourself and there are game boards, etc.

Hey, Florida here.
It's scary at first, I'll grant you that. And I've never even been to a county jail! But I was so excited that first visit it didn't matter.
You can bring up to $50 per visit. DR is allowed to have pictures taken in the ACVP. And "park" is a loose term. There is no grass (occaisionally a bird does get in somehow) and it's indoors. Kinda an old run down gym with tables. No windows, just beige.
It's worth it though.

Death Row in Florida get contact visits usually-unless they have a classification/DR problem and get behind glass-are you going to be visiting Union CI or FSP? Both have Death Row-in essence, the "overflow" from UCI goes to FSP.

Ask for an application from your loved one. It takes awhile to get approved (up to six weeks), and if coming from out of the country you will have to attach a criminal background with your application (I'm in the US, so I didn't have to). Visitation is on Saturday and Sunday from 9-3. Also, when visiting Union, make sure you get there EARLY-
I'm attaching a link from a website called the Florida Death Row Advocacy Group-it has a ton of information:

I spent alot of years at U.C.I. Death row had been in an area we called the "flat top". but then was moved accross the river to the east unit.I was there when they brought the chair back and for the first execution. His name was John Spinkilink(sp?) also, I remember the day they brought Ted Bundy in.I saw them take him up stairs to DR. There were a few guards killed and an excape from DR while I was there.Things were alot differant then.Raiford was a much more violent place in the 70s and 80s than what I hear it,s like today.I only got one visit during my 9 yrs. They had the "Goon" squad back then. They were out of controll and unchecked. We had tent city set up in the yard and Castro was sending cons and the mentally insane to the states. Many of them ended up in Raiford.Raiford(the rock)was the bottom of the barrel. It was the last stop. The name itself used to put fear in inmates.I saw my first prison murder up close on my first day in Raiford.Violence, rape, murder, was a regular occurance.I studied law there though.I took yrs. of martial arts from an inmate named Mark Herman.I lifted weights and worked in the chow hall.It was the hardest and most violent of all Fla. prisons. But I actually did my best time there once I made a name for myself.I ran a poker game on the weekends in the west unit.I also made buck for sale(home made wine).I was put on a shotgun squad once and escaped from Raiford.I spent 4 days running through the swamps being chased by bloodhounds and guards.Plus they offer a reward so every redneck in the county with a gun was looking for me.Luckly they only gave me a year for the escape.Hopefully Raiford isn,t as bad these days.I heard they tore down some of the old buildings like the main housing unit and the flat top and built new ones,I,m not sure. They still had the big oak hanging tree there when I was in Raiford. It was a pretty crazy place.Any letters you write and a visit would be great for someone inside.Anything to take them from their reality even just for a little while.
