A former Texas warden is the new superintendent at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, the state Department of Corrections announced Saturday.

Michael A. Wilson's appointment became effective Saturday. He replaces Emmitt Sparkman, who was recently appointed Deputy Commissioner of Institutions for the state's prison system.

Wilson, 48, had worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 30 years, most recently as warden of a 2,400-bed prison in Midway, Texas.

Wilson has a degree in business administration from Sam Houston University. He joined the Texas criminal justice department in 1972 as a correctional officer.
