View Full Version : Does anyone here like to quilt or embroider?
sellenburg 12-10-2004, 12:44 AM hello! I am fairly new only been here a month or so. I love to quilt and just got my Brother embroidery machine...which I am still trying to learn..LOL I do alot of sewing. I always hit the Joanns 99 cent pattern sales, and buy all my material on sale to help cut down the cost (Walmart's 1.00 and 2.00 bins are great!) I was just wondering if any of you ladies out there or guys were into this.:D
My sister loves to quilt. I am in awe of her talent. I am always picking up fat packs for her from the fabric store!!

outlawsdeb 12-10-2004, 02:15 AM i love to sew...I made a quilt top but I just haven't gotten it put together......sigh
sellenburg 12-10-2004, 01:17 PM LOL.. i too have many "started but not completed" projects. I haven't been able to do as much the last few months with the hurricane damage. But now that my house is getting back in order, I am hoping to finish them up. I am designing a quilt for Scott as a big welcome home gift. I am going to use black molecloth and red molecloth and embroider chinese dragons and symbols on it for him. (using gold on the red side and silver on the black). When I finally get it finished I will post a pic of it.
kensbabe032999 05-23-2005, 01:21 AM i was wondering if anyone here that talked on this topic is still around. let me know. i love quilting.

mrsdragoness 05-23-2005, 08:53 AM I do a little quilting, but not a lot. I also do some basic embroidery. I can't see well enough to do anything complicated.
My sister is a nationally known quilter and has won many awards. A couple of her quilts have been pubished in quilting magazines.
Ravenslove 05-23-2005, 09:44 AM I love my brother imbroidery machine as well. Yes got to love discounts on patterns.
wildthing 05-23-2005, 10:00 AM I´d love to make a quilt for our bed...I ve never done that before, but I am good in sewing clothes and stuff. So with an instruction I should get it done ;)
My problem is,I´m not used to the US sized beds! And I want the quilt be big enough!! Can anyone give me the measurements of the different US beds for two people? How is that called? King size? Queen size???? I don´t get this. Where I come from we just put the measurements! And I know they are a little different over there! Thankyou!!
1dayatatime 05-23-2005, 10:16 AM does this help---now its only the mattress size so you will have to add some :

katy bea 05-24-2005, 02:15 AM I love to embroidery but I only hand embroidery. It has a nice calming effect on me. Does anyone else hand embroidery?
ChandaMija 07-28-2005, 04:37 AM Sellec, that dragon quilt sounds beautiful! I like to quilt too.... I'm a Pink Hatter and my mother dances in her purple dress and red hat! Last Christmas, she wore a red hat with a dove on snow stuffing and white lights flashing away like a nest! LOL!!! Hand-sewing is A LOT of work! I'll stick to the sewing machine.
I once read my mother's coffee mug:
"To quilt is human, to finish is divine!"
Lillybee 07-28-2005, 10:05 AM I cannot sew even though I have a sewing machine. I would love to learn to make quilts. I do crochet and cross stitch.
BlueEyes01 07-28-2005, 10:10 AM I do quilts, and I also am learning to do sweaters :) I love doing scafs ( probably because its so easy) and hats.
Kevin's Jenn 07-28-2005, 02:03 PM I am making a quilt for Kevin and I out of hawiian prints. I don't think he knows I can even sew. He loves to surf so he should love it.
I too start projects and don't finish them. I have several quilt tops to finish.
ga scarlet 07-28-2005, 02:52 PM I used to embroider by hand a lot but right now I have to put it on hold. One of my meds cuases tremors and it is too frustrating for the moment. It is a lot of fun though and Idid a really neat block quilt with carousel horses on it for my granddaughter a couple years ago.
Hi everyone, I'm a quilter, I spend all my spare time quiting. I also have an embroidery machine but haven't done a lot on it for a while.
mrsford 12-01-2005, 11:23 PM Sellenburg, I may have seen you at the 99 cent pattern sale! LOL I love to sew and quilt. And I would love to have a Brother embroidery machine. I have my daughter in laws help me cut out the patterns and then I do the sewing. Once I have made a pattern I can go pretty fast on it. That helps when I am making the grandkids all those sleep pants that are so popular. When they were smaller they always wondered how I "bought" those that fit them so well. I am on a mission to finish projects I start. So far so good this year. In the past I have begun making clothing the kids outgrew within the year and I still did not get them finished!
meowmachine 09-02-2006, 07:17 AM Yes, I do hand embroidery. It has that nice, calming effect on me, too.
The most recent thing that I embroidered was on a tote bag. I drew a picture of a door to a house, with a wroght-iron fence, a few brick steps, and a rain-covered sidewalk. I had copied that picture from my sketchbook. Also, there are two flower pots filled with different colored flowers to give the house some color. I did part of the house, including the painted part and the bricks. Then I embroidered it. It's like painting with needle and thread. I lined the inside of the totebag with a orangish-red fabric with a floral design.
Right now, I'm keeping a few poetry books in it. Sometimes, I carry it with me. I just finished it last week.
What sort of projects have you been doing lately?
alice

JoyceRooni 10-14-2006, 10:08 AM Hi ladies. I've been a sewer since elementary school, then I got into crocheting. I'm now in my mid-40's and about 6 years ago my older sister showed me a quilt she made, and I was like "I can do that!" Since then I've made about 12. Since my man's been away (18 months now, out of at least 3 or 4 years) I've been "working" on a "motorcycle" quilt for him and I am making stupid blocks that aren't adding up to anything, and I am at a complete and total inspiration blockade!
I do all of the quilting by hand, and I've had plenty of quilt tops hang around in my closets for quite some time, but once I start the hand quilting, especially if it's winter, I can quilt all evening while doing a hundred other things.
Not sure I'm going to have Matt's "motorcycle" quilt done by the time he gets home though....
spicecd 03-13-2007, 11:54 AM I love to sew (although I don't have as much time to do so). I also go to joanns and Hancock fabrics pattern sales. I love walmarts $1 and $2 fabrics (does everyone know that walmart is closing some of their stores fabric departments?). I also go to downtown los angeles (in the fabric district) and by tons of fabric there as well. Also I love the fabric warehouse by the Citadel. Does anyone else know of good (and cheap) fabric/pattern/or sewing places?
JoyceRooni 03-14-2007, 06:05 PM I don't know, but it's ironic that five months ago was the last post to this thread, and just yesterday (after work in the glorious day light!) I started sewing again. At least a little.... ;)
spicecd 03-14-2007, 10:46 PM I didn't notice how long ago that last post was, lol! I've been on this website for a few months now and the day that I posted was the first time I had seen this forum (usually I just go to the state prison forum). At least you're sewing! I made a promise to myself that I will get back on it next week. I just missed out on Hancocks fabrics 99 cent pattern sale (I have more than enough already) but sometimes I just need a new pattern to get me back into sewing, LOL. What sewing project are you working on now?
spicecd 03-14-2007, 10:49 PM I just went back and re-read the earlier post, you actually quilt by hand? whew, just the thought of it is making my hands tired. I have never quilted but I watch sewing with Nancy and America Sews and I have been inspired to try it. How is the motorcycle quilt coming along?
ShoogaBritches 03-27-2008, 10:03 PM I am working on a 'grandmother's garden', it's all hand done (cutting, piecing, and quilted). I've got five more 'blocks' to quilt and bind it...been working on that for two years now.
I also have a 'cathedral window' I'm working on...yeap, all hand done.
I live in Florida and I really only work on them when it's chilly outside. I get the 'crafty bug' when it's cold from living in Indiana. I learned to quilt when I lived up there and I'd be snowed in. I was raised in Georgia...so this chic never did fair real well driving on the snow. About the third time my (now ex) husband had to come pull me out of the ditch...he told me to stay home, he'd take me to the grocery store or where ever.
Cabin fever set in and his cousin turned me on to quilting and the rest is history.
I always use 100% cotton, just seems to cut, sew and quilt easier than anything else.
Anyone else?
katydidsbro 03-31-2008, 11:48 PM I hand-quilt also, although I haven't done it in a long time. I piece by machine, as that is just too irritating for me to do by hand, but the quilting itself? :D I love hand-quilting!
My father's mother hand-stitched each of her children a quilt-top after they were born. My father hung on to his, and gave it to me. Since his birthday was right before Christmas, the colors are red, green, and white. I kept it for a long time, waiting until I was ready to work on it. My brother's new wife, several years back, offered to have it quilted. Not wanting to offend, I said okay. She knew that it was made in 1940, and she's a crafter, so I figured she knew that it needed to be hand-quilted or, at the very least, carefully machine-quilted. When I got it back, it was machined with the all-over squiggles (can't remember what that's called, right off hand). It looks so bad, I can't even bear to look at it. Oh, well, live and learn.
Maybe it's time to get my stuff out and think about starting again. That would be nice.
Kay
ShoogaBritches 04-01-2008, 12:54 AM I understand your feelings Kay if there was lack of communication or assumptions and it's just not what you wanted...but, think of it this way:
The newer thread in the Stippling will make it more durable. That's probably why that pattern was chosen because it's so close together.
Yes, it's always time to get the 'stuff' out! Every free moment, but who has those these days?
ritjen 04-01-2008, 06:39 PM Hi Quilter's, I am an avid quilter in fact sew everyday. Since my hubby has been gone and I am not working, it's the only thing that keeps me sane. Anyway I also started a 'grandmother's garden' quilt doing it by hand. But have put it away for some time now. I also had quilt have to have one going all the time especially if they are an heirloom type. Otherwise I machine quilt the others. I am going to see my husband this weekend and was thinking what could I take to work on while I spend the night in hotel room. I think I will get out the grandmother's garden quilt. I am afraid I might not have enough fabric to finish it, but I can just make it a table topper anyway. I would love if any of you would like to post a picture of your quilts, I don't know how to post a picture, so maybe someone will tell me. I also do redwork and applique the blanket stitch type, not needle turned can't get the hang of it. Hopefully I will see you guys here again soon. I will subscribe to this tread...
