Prison hostility outdated in new South Africa, dignitaries told

Nelson Mandela has appealed for prison warders to be decent towards prisoners, saying that prison hostility had no place in a new South Africa.
In a message delivered by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel at the former Victor Verster Prison outside Franschhoek yesterday, Mandela said that whereas prisons under the apartheid system were designed to "break one's spirit and destroy one's resolve", correctional centres under the present government were supposed to operate in an "enabling human rights environment".
