LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Church leaders united on Wednesday to condemn a Christmas Nativity tableau depicting soccer star David Beckham as Joseph and his pop singer wife Victoria as the Virgin Mary.

Anglicans, Catholics and Presbyterians called the exhibit at Madame Tussaud's waxwork museum in London a new low in the cult of celebrity worship.

In the tableau, Australian pop star Kylie Minogue hovers above the crib as an angel while "Posh Spice" Victoria lays her shawled head tenderly on Beckham's shoulder.

Tony Blair, George W. Bush and the Duke of Edinburgh star as The Three Wise Men. The shepherds are played by Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson, British actor Hugh Grant and camp Irish comedian Graham Norton.

The Vatican was not amused.

"This is worse than bad taste. It is cheap," an official Vatican source told Reuters in Rome.

"You cannot use contemporary personalities as the central figures of the Nativity ... And it becomes worse, if that were possible, if the people may be of questionable moral standing," he added.

He said it was sometimes acceptable to use modern figures in the supporting roles because it can help make Christmas contemporary -- but not the central characters.

In Naples, for example, famous figures like Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona have been depicted as shepherds in creche scenes.

A spokesman for Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of 70 million Anglicans worldwide, reacted with weary resignation to the "Posh and Becks" tableau.

"There is a tradition of each generation trying to re-interpret the Nativity but, oh dear ...," he said.

Paul Handley, editor of the Anglican Church Times, thought the tableau was "just pathetic."

"It is yet another sign that people feel they can play around with sacred things," he told Reuters. "God is not going to worry. He is going to cope -- but it is a bit depressing."

The Rev. Rod Thomas, spokesman for the conservative evangelical grouping Reform, told Reuters: "This is just an additional indication of the way people exploit the Christian message without any real understanding of its significance."

"Would they do the same thing for a depiction of a major event in the Muslim faith?" he asked.

A spokesman for the Presbyterian Church was equally forthright: "The waxwork will cause offence to many and it should be pulled down straight away."

The Beckhams were not aware of the museum's plans to depict them in the Nativity scene, a spokesman for the couple told Reuters. "We have nothing to say on this" he added.

As the row rumbles over his unsuspecting head, the England captain may have trouble counting on divine inspiration: he is in Italy preparing for Real Madrid's European Champions League clash with AS Roma -- just a stone's throw from the Vatican.

Oh Phil, couldn't we have just one place that was Beckham free?????????? But I'm so glad I'm not at all religious so I can laugh at the two of them, who have as much personality between them as a dead fish, and the reaction they're getting for this. I think the public have had enough of the twosome, even Sir Elton wasn't too complimentary a little while ago, and he's godfather to their children!!

Vandal Damages Nativity Scene Featuring Posh Spice and David Beckham As Parents of Jesus

LONDON Dec 13, 2004 — A waxwork nativity scene that features soccer star David Beckham and his pop star wife, Victoria, as the parents of Jesus has been damaged in an attack, Madame Tussauds museum said Monday.

The museum piece, which has drawn criticism from Christian leaders who say it's disrespectful, was damaged Sunday when a male visitor pushed over the figures of the Beckhams before running out, museum spokeswoman Diane Moon said.

The exhibit had been closed off and police and museum staff were investigating security footage to track down the vandal, Moon said.

The waxwork tableau also features President Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prince Philip as the three Wise Men; actors Hugh Grant and Samuel L. Jackson as shepherds; and disco diva Kylie Minogue as an angel.

The display drew the ire of church leaders when it went on show last week.

A Vatican spokesman said it was unacceptable to have celebrities representing Jesus, Joseph or Mary. The Rev. Jonathan Jenkins, spokesman for the archbishop of Canterbury, who leads the world's 77 million Anglicans, said the depiction went too far.

Moon said the nativity scene had been an incredibly popular exhibit and museum staff hoped to have it back on display as soon as possible.

"We are assessing the damage now, we don't know if it's going to be repairable in a day or if it will take longer," she said.

She said the museum had received about 70 complaints about the exhibit.

"The vast majority of people have taken it in the spirit in which it is intended a bit of festive fun," she said.

They've had to close the exhibit so it looks as if this great activist won. The figures of Posh and Becks were damaged beyond repair and none of the others were touched. At a cost of around £100,000 ($180,000) for the two that is such a waste of money, money that could have been used feeding the homeless over the holiday period.

Everybody's reacting to Beckham and Posh here, I still can't get my mind around the concept of GW as a Wise Man...
