I have a loved one in Lawton and know nothing regarding rules. Can someone help me with some information? Can you send someone a shirt or is than not allowed (Does it have to be ordered by the inmate or can they receive packages or do they have to be ordered from certain place). Does Lawton have a chaplain, if so how would I find out who he is. Can I ask my church to send a taped service? Can I send a book from Amazon - is that considered an appropriate vendor? Regarding TVs and cassette players - do they have to be purchased from the canteen? I know that seems like a lot of questions, but I know nothing and any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

My friend just left Lawton today from what I have been told....but to answer some of your questions.

From what I have been told you can't send anything in like shirts.....they have to buy them from the canteen. I have heard that some guys can get shoes sent in through property but not positive if it works for everyone.

They do have a chaplain but I don't know his name....you can call the facility and they should be able to put you in touch with him or at least give you his name. He can probably answer the question about tapes from the church also.

As far as TVs and cassette players they also have to come from the canteen. I am not sure about Amazon.....hopefully someone will be along soon to answer that question.

About the book from Amazon, I sent my cous a subscription for a magazine through Amazon, tho he's in Dick conner.
You can call the prison and ask all those questions, tho sometimes I think none of them know what the rules really are, and the rules change depending on who you talk to <rolling eyes>

I'm a lawton mom,LOL everything comes from canteen only, except news papers, books you can have them sent from any book store or off line. No books on tatoo's,or like playboy etc. No tapes from anywhere! And like friend said the chaplin you can call the prison and they'll put ya in touch with him. NOW is he a med inmate or min? Because lawton has 2 area's, med and max, and then min, which min has a different set of rules,there they can have a package of some things you have to call to fined out what the rules are for min.

I was a former Lawton Lady too and what you've been reading is what it was like for me also. As far as I know, an approved vendor here just means that it needs to be sent in by a book seller instead of by you. The idea of using a small used bookstore is a great one! My sis runs one and I would send my books through there to Lawton all the time. If you feel gutsy, you can just ask a store clerk if they would be able to ship purchases to a prison for you. The worst they can do is tell you no.

Amazon, Barnes&Noble, ABE, Half.com all should work. Just make sure that you have his DOC number listed with the address.

And the only things I was told I could send in were my husband's wedding band and a pair of prescription glasses. He never got around to sending me his eye script so I never actually tried to mail them in and they gave him a hard time about his ring, but he still got it. I do know that tapes aren't allowed at all though, sorry.

Actually, Ldy, they can have Playboy. I sent my honey a script for his B-day. he rent's it out.. LOL when he's done with it of course.. :D you can have calendars sent it as long as it has no wires and it is sent from the company and they do check. If you have any questions about certain items. call the facility they have been more than happy to help me with little stuff like that.. they just won't approve my visit.. :angry:

My guy wanted me to get him a subscription to Gallery because it has a higher rent value than Playboy....lol. I told him that I wasn't wasting my money on a sub. just so he could hustle. My guy's too small to hustle :D

Playboy is only $15????? I thought it'd be way more than that. Heck, I would have spent $15...lol. The problem is that my guy *thinks* he can hustle and he chooses the oddest things. He had a kool-aid racket going for a while! This is how it worked...get kool-aid...hand it out for free. Yep, that worked great for him.
