Addictions and the Offender Population
Drug abuse is a global phenomenon that affects communities around the world. Every correctional system has a problem with drug abuse among offenders and Canada is no exception. Almost 80% of offenders arrive at federal prisons with some level of substance abuse problem, and many have multiple addictions. Substance abuse has devastating effects on the offender population. When drugs are smuggled inside, it can lead to violence and the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.
