After a slew of recent arrests, Chatham-Kent police aren’t parking efforts to stop local prostitution.
A sting on Chatham’s east side late last week resulted in charges against three alleged johns and two alleged prostitutes.
Insp. Tim Mifflin, of the Chatham-Kent Police Service, said hookers and their customers can expect further crackdowns.
“This is going to be an ongoing issue that we, as a police service, have to address,” he said.
Mifflin said prostitution won’t go away on its own so the police service will have to drive it away.
“I think we will successfully deal with this problem,” the inspector said.
Mifflin was tight-lipped about the behind-the-scenes aspects of the sting, including whether local officers were put on the streets.
He said these operations have been a long time coming.
“It has been documented for over a year,” he said.
Mifflin added local officers underwent extensive training and participated in similar stings across the province.
“Now they are applying that experience and training to the problem we have in this community,” he said.
The inspector said prostitution is often a symptom of a community’s drug problem.
He noted the arrests during the crackdown Thursday and Friday are not the first.
And, he said, prostitution doesn’t just plague the east side.
A woman was investigated recently on the north side for prostitution.
However, no charges were laid in that case due to a lack of evidence.
Between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Friday, three men were charged with communicating for the purpose of prostitution.
The ages of the men range from 42 to 59. All three men were arrested on Wellington Street East in Chatham. They are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 11.
Two women, aged 18 and 22, were also charged in connection with prostitution after being arrested on Wellington Street.
In a similar sting last month, police charged four women with communication for the purpose of prostitution. They range in ages from 18 to 43 and are scheduled to appear in court Dec. 29.
That crackdown also took place on the east side.
Members of East Side Pride have applauded police efforts to stop prostitution in their neighbourhood.
