MOSCOW, Idaho -- Former Seattle TV reporter Eric Cannavaro has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for sexually abusing the son of a friend but can have the conviction erased from his record if he completes the sentence successfully.
"You are somebody, withstanding what you have done, who deserves another opportunity," 2nd District Judge John Stegner told Cannavaro during Monday's sentencing hearing. He will serve his time on work release, where he works during the day and spends nights and days off in jail.
After his release, Cannavaro, 37, must register as a sex offender, pay a $5,000 civil penalty, complete up to five years probation and pay restitution to the victim's family.
Cannavaro, who is currently undergoing sex offender counseling, is barred from contact with anyone younger than 18 and with the victim and his family in Genesee. He is also banned from public parks, swimming pools and schools without an approved chaperone.
"This may sound so insufficient, but I just want to say I'm sorry for what I did," Cannavaro said at the hearing. "This has been the most horrendous experience of my life."
Cannavaro was suspended in January by KIRO-TV in Seattle after he was charged in December.
