I have a friend in the Sussex 1 State prison in Virgina. I received a letter from him wanting me to send him some information off the internet relating to his court case. I check and all of the information he wants can be found on the internet. My question is can I mail him this information, and if so, how many pages can I send?

You should be able to mail it with no problem. As to how many pages to send at one time. I would call the unit directly and ask them. Each unit it differant.

do you have ALOT to send? My guy isn't at sussex - but is in Virginia and can only receive mail with one stamp (regular sized envelope) - usually that means 6 pages of notebook paper - 5 pages of THIN computer paper (I would go with 4 pages per envelope) to be safe. if you call the facility where he is - they may be able to give you a better idea of what the rules are specific to that prison

Sussex 1 and Wallens Ridge are the only two Level 5 prisons in VA. I send my son and also through my volunteer group, we send many inmates at both prisons internet information without a problem. However, there weigh system is off. Sometimes 5 pages is too many. We have found in the past 2 years, to be safe, 4 pages per envelope.

I always cut & paste anything from the internet into my letters... You can condense it quite a bit then so you're not wasting as much paper, ink, and you can send many more pages.

My boyfriend is in greenville and i have sent him up to six or seven pages at one time with more than one stamp it may be just the rules of the prison that tell you how many you can send i would call and ask.

My experience has been that it is best to send no more than 5 printed (computer paper) pages or 5-6 notebook pages per mailing. Before my friend transfered to Greensville from Sussex1 they were fairly strict and I know they did screen the mail there (at least some of the time) I got one letter back saying that he was not allowed to receive information from the Virginia Department of Corrections site. I did a couple of mailings with more than one stamp but was never sure if he actually received those. It is probably better to split the larger mailings up just to be on the safe side. He may not be able to respond if he hasn't had a chance to get his stamps or envelopes from commisary, I think it is every two weeks there. I have a pen pal there and he just told me that they changed the mail rules to 7 items per envelope, 4 sheets of papers-3 pictures, or 7 sheets of papers, etc, but it still can only have 1 stamp. Hope this helps.

The only thing I ever had returned to me was information printed from the Virginia Department of Corrections site itself. Apparently they can be incarrcerated by the state but the state just dosent want them knowing the rules... ;-) !?
I only send 5-6 printed sheets at a time so I don't have to get into the bulk postal rate since only one stamp is allowed.

Here in SC there isn't a limit to the amount that I can send, but he can only put 7 pieces of paper in one envelope.

As far as the 7 page limit...i havent heard that. I sent 4 pages last week n 2 drawings from my daughter (forgetting the limit) and they returned it all back to me. i guess it depends on the guard. although last year i sent a 5 page letter with 5 pics in it n it all went through. Billysbaybee...where did ur friend here that? i gotta call and find out.
